Performance Comparison Analysis between IEEE 802. 11a/b/g/n Standards

Abstract: Now days, in practical application scenario, with increasing demand of wireless LANs, higher data rates are required. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is based on IEEE 802.11 standard and is also popular by the name as Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi). The task groups within the 802.11 working group introduced few extensions to the original specifications. The well known extensions of 802.11 specifications are 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g and 802.11n. This paper provides the major differences between various IEEE 802.… Show more

“…The IEEE 802.11 network includes several basic service sets, in which a number of wireless stations transmit or receive from a single access point shown in Figure 3. The following Table 1 outlines some of these standards in terms of the operating frequency and data rate [20,21].…”

“…Uplink and down link traffic loads are created when the session of the VOIP starts. Suppose 802.11b standard is used with G.711 (20ms) voice codec, the data rate of 802.11b standard is 11Mbps [23]. Besides that, the capacity of the voice user can be calculated simply by dividing the wireless 802.11b data rate over two ways G.711 data rates (11Mbps/2×80kbps), equivalent to 68 voice users.…”

“…layer of an IEEE802.11b WLAN system against the received SNR varied at the physical layer by varying receiver position for both single and multiple users on the network. According to Moltchanov, et al [8] and Khanduri and Rattan [9] IEEE802.11b WLAN system still maintains its place as the technology that provides the largest range even though it is an old technology. In applications where range rather than high data speed or bandwidth is more important; IEEE802.11b is preferred above other newer technologies.…”

“…Different aspects of the performance characteristics of WLANs are captured by several developed models. The path loss and SNR process of IEEE802.11 wireless channels at the physical layer are captured by propagation models [9][10][11][12]. Data link and network layers characteristic are captured by Protocol data units (PDU) error models which include symbol, bit and frame error models [13][14][15][16].…”
