Performance comparison of guidance strategies to accomplish RTAs during a CDO

Abstract: Abstract-Continuous Descent Operations with ControlledTimes of Arrival (CTA) at one or several metering fixes could enable environmentally friendly procedures without compromising capacity. This type of flight operation requires advanced on-board systems not only able to compute a plan satisfying Required Times of Arrival (RTAs), but also to safely and efficiently guide the aircraft during the execution of the descent such that RTAs are accurately accomplished. The primary aim of this paper is to compare the p… Show more

“…In previous work [2], the performance of various guidance strategies in the time and energy managed operations (TEMO) concept [3] were compared using a high-fidelity flight simulator, in particular environmental impact mitigation and the ability to meet operational constraints. Several descents subject to CTAs were simulated including errors in the parameters of the weather and aircraft performance models used by the FMS.…”

“…In our previous work [4], the performance of various guidance strategies in the time and energy managed operations concept [5] were compared using a high-fidelity fast-time flight simulator, focusing on the environmental impact mitigation and the ability to meet operational constraints. Numerous descents subject to CTAs were simulated, with errors introduced in the parameters of the weather and aircraft performance models used by the trajectory planning function of the FMS.…”
