Performance Evaluation of a Small-Scale Turbojet Engine Running on Palm Oil Biodiesel Blends

Abstract: The experimental and simulated performance of an Armfield CM4 turbojet engine was investigated for palm oil methyl ester biodiesel (PME) and its blends with conventional Jet A-1 fuel. The volumetric blends of PME with Jet A-1 are 20, 50, 70, and 100% (B20, B50, B70, and B100). Fuel heating values (FHV) of each fuel mixture were obtained by calorimetric analysis. The experimental tests included performance tests for Jet A-1 and B20, while the performances of B50 to B100 were simulated using GasTurb 11 analytica… Show more

“…The broadest research of bioliquids in MGT was performed in commercial systems, which were not primarily designed for high efficiency stationary and decentralized power generation rather being mostly derived from APU units, small jet engines or field gensets for military use. These are: [62]  Artouste MK113 APU [34]  Model jet engine, Sr-30 [63] Listed studies addressed wide spectra of vegetable oils, waste greases and biodiesels blended in different blending ratios with D2 or kerosene. The employed approach usually consisted of start-up with conventional fuel followed by switching to a tested bioliquid.…”

“…Experiments and simulations were conducted to investigate the performance of the Armfield CM4 turbojet engine with palm oil methyl ester biodiesel (PME) and its blends with Jet-A1 fuel 76 . Biodiesel blend with 20% PME shows a comparable level of performance as compared to that of Jet-A1 fuel, especially in terms of thrust and thermal efficiency.…”
