Many similarities exist between digital storage and baseband data transmission. Instead of delivering data “from here to there”, the digital storage channel delivers data “from now to then”. This chapter provides an overview of digital magnetic storage, including the recording process underlying the generation of signal, noise, distortion, and interference, the unique characteristics and constraints of the magnetic recording channel, and the signal processing and coding methods which are deployed ubiquitously in today's magnetic disk drives.
