Performance Evaluation of Transcoding Algorithms for H. 264

Abstract: The latest video coding standard H.264 has been recently approved and has already been adopted for numerous applications including HD-DVD and satellite broadcast. To allow interconnectivity between different applications using H.264, transcoding will be a key factor. This paper assesses the performance of existing requantization techniques developed when applied to H.264 together with a new technique. The proposed transcoding algorithm is based on a mixed requantization technique which gives a good compromise … Show more

“…An alternative to requantization, which is called DCT coefficient dropping or dynamic rate shaping, directly cuts high-frequency coefficients from each macroblock [6]. More recently, different bit rate adaption methods have been proposed for H.264/AVC bitstreams [7]- [10]. An efficient mixed transrating architecture containing a low complexity scheme combined with a drift cancelling closed-loop scheme was proposed in [8].…”

“…Considerable research efforts have been dedicated to the design of H.264 video codec [7][8][9][10]. H.264/AVC provides the best performance in terms of its rate-distortion efficiency amongst the existing standards [11,12].…”
