Performance of a prototype active veto system using liquid scintillator for a dark matter search experiment

Abstract: We report the performance of an active veto system using a liquid scintillator with NaI(Tl) crystals for use in a dark matter search experiment. When a NaI(Tl) crystal is immersed in the prototype detector, the detector tags 48% of the internal 40 K background in the 0-10 keV energy region. We also determined the tagging efficiency for events at 6-20 keV as 26.5 ± 1.7% of the total events, which corresponds to 0.76 ± 0.04 events/keV/kg/day. According to a simulation, approximately 60% of the background events … Show more

“…From our COSINE-100 experience, we have identified the crystal growth as the key component for reducing the overall background, of which radioactive 40 K and 210 Pb contaminants are the most troublesome [29,34,35]. The COSINE-100 detector is immersed in an active liquid scintillator veto system that reduces the impact of 40 K impurities [26,36,37] but 210 Pb has to be eliminated at the crystal production stage. The PICO-LON experiment made a crystal with a 210 Pb contamination as low as 29±7 µBq/kg by using a cation resin-based NaI powder purification system, but had difficulties reproducing additional crystals with similar quality [27,38].…”

“…The COSINE-100 detector consists of eight NaI(Tl) crystals with a total mass of 106 kg, a 2200 L linear alkylbenzene (LAB)-based liquid scintillator (LS) veto for internal background suppression with coincidence event tagging [11] as well as cosmic-ray muons, copper and lead shielding, and 37 plastic scintillator (PS) panels that serve as an additional veto for cosmic-ray muons. Figure 1 shows a schematic representation of the COSINE-100 detector and shielding structure.…”

“…COSINE-100 is located at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory (Y2L) in South Korea, with >700 m of rock overburden. It consists of eight NaI(Tl) crystals with a total mass of 106 kg immersed in 2200 l of liquid scintillator (LS) that reduces internal and external backgrounds [28]. Each NaI(Tl) crystal is optically coupled to two photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), each of which detects scintillation photons with the signals recorded as 8 µs waveforms [29].…”
