Performance of Free-Space QKD Systems Using SIM/BPSK and Dual-Threshold/Direct-Detection

Abstract: Abstract-This paper proposes a novel free-space quantum key distribution (QKD) system using subcarrier intensitymodulation (SIM) binary phase-shift-keying (BPSK) and dualthreshold/direct-detection (DT/DD) receiver with an avalanche photodiode (APD). The proposed system enables the adoption of well-developed analytical models in conventional free-space optical (FSO) communications and achieves the QKD function with a simple configuration. We analytically investigate the design criteria for transmitter and recei… Show more

“…To obtain the channel transmittance, we first need to model the free-space channel. Different with a general free-space MDI-QKD, our MRR-MDI-QKD suffers from the doublepass channel, where the total geometric loss in the two passes can be described as [19,20]:…”

“…The equation of geometrical loss as suggested in [29] has been used in standard FSO using a single beam specifically in quantum communication [30,31], respectively, and can be calculated using:…”

“…Since only the two-way system is used at the encoding side, the encoding process can automatically compensate for the birefringence, polarization-related loss, and phase shift in the fiber [5,40,41] . QKD in free space requires a set of devices that can transmit and track scan probes [42,43] . Our scheme can increase the number of Alice users by sharing only one transmitter at low cost; combined with time division multiplexing (TDM) [35] , we can realize QKD between all users in one region and Bob in another region.…”
