“…The popular hermetic bags are Super Bags (GrainPro, Washington, D.C., USA) and Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bags, and are being used in >80 countries to protect grains, legumes, and industrial commodities [ 229 ]. A PICS bag is comprised of a double layer of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liners inside of a woven bag, while a Super Bag consists of a single HDPE layer to control post-harvest losses in cereals [ 230 ]. In a recent study conducted at agro-climatic conditions of Pakistan, quality of quinoa seeds stored in hermetic bags at 8% initial seed moisture content is preserved in terms of higher germination and vigor and negligible seed deterioration compared with traditional storage under diverse ambient conditions.…”

“…Increasing damages were observed in the Super Grain Pro bag as the storage time increased, especially after 18 months of storage. This might be due to that the hermetic bags are not perfectly impermeable to oxygen and moisture, or bag condition during storage (invisible damage by insects, or any other form) might have contributed to permeability of the bags (Kiobia et al., 2020). Baoua et al (2014) also suggested that the high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) layers are not perfect oxygen barriers but greatly reduce the rate of oxygen exchange with the surrounding environment.…”

“…Most of the surveyed farmers opened their HSTs periodically after sealing to obtain grains either to be used as food or to sell for income to meet their household needs. While the opening of hermetic storage interrupts the herme- ticity principle, sealing the container shortly after has been shown not to significantly impact grain quality [56].…”
