The lack of clean water sources, due to the presence of pollutants in water, is a major issue in many countries, including Malaysia. To overcome this problem, various methods have been introduced, including phytoremediation treatment. Therefore, this phytoremediation study examined the ability of five aquatic plants—Centella asiatica, Ipomoea aquatica, Salvinia molesta, Eichhornia crassipes, and Pistia stratiotes—to remove three pollutants—total suspended solids (TSS), ammoniacal nitrogen (NH3-N), and phosphate—from aquaculture wastewater. Using wastewater samples, each containing 50 g of one of the plants, the pollutant levels were measured every two days for 14 days. The results showed a drastic decline in the concentration of pollutants, where C. asiatica was able to remove 98% of NH3-N, 90% of TSS, and 64% of phosphate, while I. aquatica showed the potential to eliminate up to 73% of TSS and NH3-N, and 50% of phosphate. E. crassipes drastically removed 98% of phosphate, 96% of TSS, and 74% of NH3-N, while P. stratiotes was able to eliminate 98% of TSS, 78% of NH3-N, and 89% of phosphate. S. molesta was efficient in removing 89.3% of TSS and 88.6% of phosphate, but only removed 63.9% of NH3-N.

Constructed wetland applications have been limited by a large land requirement and capital investment. This study aimed to improve a shallow pond water hyacinth system by incorporating the advantages of engineered attached microbial growth technique (termed Bio-hedge) for on-site domestic wastewater treatment. A laboratory scale continuous-flow system consists of the mesh type matrix providing an additional biofilm surface area of 54 m 2 /m 3 . Following one year of experimentation, the process showed more stability and enhanced performance in removing organic matter and nutrients, compared to traditional water hyacinth (by lowering 33%-67% HRT) and facultative (by lowering 92%-96% HRT) ponds. The wastewater exposed plants revealed a relative growth rate of 1.15% per day, and no anatomical deformities were observed. Plant nutrient level averaged 27 ± 1.7 and 44 ± 2.3 mg N/g dry weight, and 5 ± 1.4 & 9±1.2 mg P/g dry weight in roots and shoots, respectively. Microorganisms immobilized on Bio-hedge media (4.06 × 10 7 cfu/cm 2 ) and plant roots (3.12 × 10 4 cfu/cm) were isolated and identified (a total of 23 strains). The capital cost was pre-estimated for 1 m 3 /d wastewater at 78 US$/m 3 inflow and 465 US$/kg BOD5 removed. Se evaluó el aporte de las plantas acuáticas Pistia stratiotes y Eichhornia crassipes en el tratamiento del agua residual municipal (ARM) de la ciudad de Riohacha en Colombia. Se estableció un diseño experimental de un factor (plantas) y seis niveles que corresponden a los cinco tratamientos y un control. Se instalaron seis microcosmos con capacidad de 84,4 L que funcionaron a condiciones ambientales. De acuerdo a la prueba de Dunnet, no existe diferencia significativa entre los tratamientos y el control, por tanto no hay un aporte significativo de las plantas en la remoción de los contaminantes. Sin embargo, una pequeña diferencia en la remoción puede satisfacer las exigencias legales. Las máximas eficiencias de remoción se presentaron en los microcosmo con 100% y 50% cobertura de Pistia stratiotes, excepto DBO5 que se presentó en el sistemas con 50% de cada planta.
