Performance of Police-Assistant Students Compared with the Other Students in Schools of Hamadan, Concerning the Prevention of Road Traffic Injuries

Background: Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are one of the most critical factors that endanger human health. More specifically, head and neck injuries are the main causes of deaths and disabilities among motorcyclists. This study aimed to investigate the predictive factors of helmet use behavior among motorcyclists based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Study Design: This study followed the cross-sectional design. Methods: This study was conducted on randomly selected 730 motorcyclist employees in Qom, Iran, in 2021. The data collection tool was a self-administered researcher-made questionnaire, including items on demographic characteristics, history of RTIs, and constructs of TPB. Data were analyzed using descriptive summary statistics, analysis of variance, independent samples t test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and structural equation modeling (SEM). Results: In this study, only 9.8% of the participants reported that they always used a helmet while riding a motorcycle. About 60% reported a history of a motorcycle crash, and 11.5% had a history of head injuries. The direct effect of attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control on the intention to use a helmet were statistically significant, explaining 59% of the variation in behavioral intention (intention to use a helmet) (R2=0.59). Moreover, perceived behavioral control and behavioral intention had significant effects on helmet use behavior (R2=0.26). Conclusion: The prevalence of helmet use among the studied population was very low. Moreover, TPB was useful in identifying the determinants of behavior and especially behavioral intention of helmet use among motorcyclists.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a school-based educational intervention on safe crossing of streets in elementary school students. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study with pre-test/ post test design. A total of 66 elementary school students were randomly selected from two selected schools in Yazd, Iran in 2019. The intervention consisted of theoretical and practical education in the school context. Data were collected by a self-designed checklist containing 12 questions. Data analysis was performed using spss21 software. Results: The results showed that the least safe behavior was related to pedestrian crosswalk and pedestrian bridge crossing. The mean score of street safe behavior before and after the training was 9.24(2) and 11.62(0.75), respectively, which was statistically significant (p <0.001). The mean score of safe traffic behaviors of girls after intervention was 11.7(0.48) and for boys was 11.45(0.93), which were statistically significant (p = 0.017). Conclusion: The results showed that the school-based educational intervention was effective on the safe crossing of streets in students.

Background and Objective: A significant proportion of spinal cord injuries and physical-motor disabilities are caused by road traffic crashes. The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of people with disability due to traffic accidents. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted using a qualitative phenomenological approach. The participants were a purposive sample of physical-motor disabled people due to road traffic injuries referred to the rehabilitation centers in East Azerbaijan, Iran. Data were collected using individual in-depth interviews and analyzed with a thematic analysis including holistic, selective and detailed approaches. Results: The main theme extracted from the experience of the participants was "captive of destiny" with three sub-themes including 'surrender of fate', 'living behind the fence' and 'drowning in disability and need'. Accordingly, participants considered themselves as the victims of destiny and believed living with disability is like living behind the fences of loneliness, frustration, regret, fear of future, pity and inefficiency. Conclusion:This study revealed that spinal cord disability imposed irreversible restrictions on the participants' lives, so that as dependent people, they needed support from others and, were desperate to recover their lost power, found them in the fate prison. Social support and empowerment of these people to overcome disability can improve their mental health and help them return to a normal life.
