Biodiversitas 23: 5227-5232. The decline in productivity of gambier jasmine flowers is not only caused by the reduction of gambier jasmine land area but also insect, caterpillar and pest mite attacks. Types of pest mites and their population dynamics are closely related to abiotic factor conditions such as temperature, humidity, rainfall, season, an abundance of predatory mites and types of plant cultivars. The study aimed to determine the types of pest mites and some abiotic factors that affect their abundance in gambier jasmine plants. The research method was a survey with a purposive sampling technique. Sampling locations were in Cipawon village, Bukateja sub-district, Purbalingga district, and Central Java Province, Indonesia. The obtained data were analyzed by analysis of variance at an error rate of 0.05. The types of pest mites that were identified consisted of 8 species, namely Brevipalpus phoenicis, B. californicus, B. papayensis, B. obovatus, Tetranychus urticae, T. kanzawai, T. cinnabarinus and Tyrophagus putrescentiae. The type of pest mite always found at each sampling point was B. phoenicis, with an abundance range of 0.027 to 0.067. The results of the analysis of the variance of pest mite abundance in gambier jasmine plantations showed that abundance of individuals between pest mite species did not significantly differ at all sampling points. Based on multivariate analysis, it was noted that trichome density had the most influence on pest mite abundance with a population model of Y = 0.399 + 0.043a + 0.012b.

Tetranychus urticae is one of the most important pests of many species of economically important crops, cultivated both under cover and in open ground. Feeding T. urticae reduces the size and quality of the yield. Nowadays, in connection with the popularization of organic farming and the green order policy, non-chemical methods that provide an effective reduction in the harmfulness of this spider mite are sought. The aim of the study is to present the current state of knowledge on methods of reducing the undesirable effects of T. urticae feeding. The paper discusses the main directions of searching for biopesticides against T. urticae and provides a list of natural components on which commercially available products are based. The aspect of using the natural properties of plants, micro- and macro-organisms is presented. The paper also deals with the issue of the spread of spider mites in connection with the observed climate changes.

Tetranychus truncatus Ehara (Acari: Tetranychidae) has become one of the major phytophagous pests in China in recent years, and is found on a wide range of host plants. However, little information is available on the population performance of this arthropod pest on potatoes. In this study, we explored the population growth of T. truncatus on two drought-tolerant potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars under laboratory conditions using the age-stage, two-sex life table. Tetranychus truncatus completed its entire life history on both potato cultivars tested, Holland 15 and Longshu 10. There was no significant difference between two potato cultivars in developmental duration. Tetranychus truncatus had shorter adult longevity (20.61 days), adult female longevity (20.41 days), and total female longevity (33.66 days) on Longshu 10 than Holland 15 (21.16 days, 21.19 days, and 34.38 days, respectively). However, it exhibited a higher preadult survival rate, higher fecundity (F = 88.32 eggs per female), and relatively higher population parameters when reared on Longshu 10 than on Holland 15 (F = 75.70 eggs per female). Growth projection also showed that the population size of T. truncatus on Longshu 10 (expand 750-fold) was larger than that on Holland 15 (expand 273-fold) after 60 days. Our results demonstrate that the drought-sensitive potato variety, Holland 15, is relatively resistant to T. truncatus compared with the drought-tolerant variety, Longshu 10, and suggest that T. truncatus exhibited a trade-off between longevity and reproduction on both potato cultivars. Our findings provide information on population prediction, which may aid the management of this pest mite species of potatoes.
