Performing Quality Assurance of Carbon Dioxide for Carbon Capture and Storage

Abstract: Impurities in carbon dioxide can affect several aspects of the carbon capture and storage process, including storage capacity, rock erosion, accuracy of flow meters, and toxicity of potential leaks. There is an industry need for guidance on performing purity analysis before carbon dioxide is transported and stored. This paper reviews selected reports that specifically provide threshold amount fraction limits for impurities in carbon dioxide for the purpose of transport and storage, with rationales for these li… Show more

“…The desulfurization efficiency inside the combustor was reduced from 90% to 65% for consistency with previous experimental studies 9,17,18 . The composition of the CO 2 product stream from the CPU was 95.6 vol% CO 2 , 2.1 vol% O 2 , 1,7 vol% Ar, 0.5 vol% N 2 , and 146 ppm CO, which satisfied the recommended CO 2 quality for CCS 33 . The in‐furnace desulfurization and FGC processing are described below, with a focus on the sulfur removal.…”

“…The purified CH 4 (RNG) is compressed to 283 bar to become CNG, stored in tube truck trailers, and distributed to fueling stations , (SI Section 13). The CO 2 -rich stream (purity is >96%) is sequestered or vented. In this design, a portion of biogas is diverted to a fired heater to generate hot water (thermal efficiency = 80%) to meet facility heat demands .…”

“…Porter et al [32], Murugan et al [33] and Anheden [34] define the composition of CO 2 streams as a function of capture technologies such as pre-combustion, postcombustion and oxyfuel (Table 2). Levels of CO 2 in all separation/capture technologies are in 90-99.9% v/v and the main impure components for oxyfuel are N 2 ,O 2 and Ar, and in some cases SO 2 is present.…”
