Pericardial mesothelioma in a German Shepherd dog: a case report

Abstract: ABSTRACT:In this case report, a diagnosis of pericardial mesothelioma in a four year old male German shepherd dog is described. The dog, which had anorexia, bloody diarrhoea, dehydration and depression and, died on day 10 of therapy, was systematically necropsied. At necropsy, approximately 1.5 litres of cloudy and bloody exudate were detected in the thoracic cavity. The parietal lamina of the pericardium was covered with multilobular nodular masses related with each other, 1 to 5 cm in diameter and grey-yello… Show more

“…Although low in prevalence, the neoplasms that most frequently cause pleural effusion in dogs by direct seeding and invasion of the pleura are mesothelioma and carcinoma. Mesothelioma, a primary malignant neoplasm of the pleura, pericardium, or peritoneum, can be particularly difficult to diagnose on routine cytologic preparations because malignant mesothelial cells may appear similar to the reactive mesothelial cells seen with inflammatory pleural conditions . Carcinoma metastasis to the pleura can also be difficult to diagnose cytologically and may require immunocytochemical analysis of the effusion or histopathology .…”

“…And the authors emphasized that the analysis was done with successive tissue sections from the same paraffin block (28). In a German Shepherd dog, pericardial mesothelioma had weak cytokeratin positivity and intense vimentin reaction (6).…”

“…The tissues were fixed in 10% formaldehyde for 48 h and embedded in paraffin, sectioned to make histopathological slides, stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE), and observed under an optical microscope. According to Ceribasi et al (2014), fragments were classified according to the absence or presence of pneumonia.…”
