“…In comparison to the published literature, we found confirming data regarding higher maternal age in ART twins [8,17,[25][26][27]30]. Only the study of Han et al [16] observed no evidence for increased maternal age in ART twins. Similarly, a higher rate of primiparity and pre-eclampsia was previously described to be present in twins born after ART, respectively only IVF [6,8,12,16,17,26].…”

“…In addition, the rate of Caesarean section observed in another German study differs markedly between ART (76.2 %) and SC (42.5 %) twins [16]. It is possible that regional differences as well as selective patient admission policies play a role in causing the discrepancies to our data [16]. Over the last decade, the rates of Caesarean section in Germany generally increased to 31 % in 2008 (Statistisches Bundesamt, 2008) [35].…”

“…In the United States, twin deliveries increased by 62 % for Caucasians from 1975 to 2000, with the largest increase occurring in the year 2000, affirming the topicality and significance of the issue of twin pregnancy [1,2]. In Switzerland, twin births have risen by more than 50 % since 1980, which in part is ascribable to the augmented use of assisted reproductive technologies and the rise in average maternal age when pregnant [3]. In 2004 the incidence of multiple births in Switzerland accounted for 1.7 % of all births, with 94 % of these twin births [4].…”
