Periodic Leg Movements During Sleep and Sleep Disturbances in Elders

Abstract: Background. Periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) are an increasingly pervasive disturbance for aging adults. The aims of this experiment were: (a) to describe the index of periodic limb movements in sleep (myoclonus index [MI] in elderly subjects with complaints of poor sleep or depression (N = 22; 68 ± 5.5 SD years); and (b) to correlate MI with sleep history, depression scores, and objective and subjective indices of sleep.

“…17,32 The findings obtained in the present study on associations or co-morbidity of PLMS with some physical and mental conditions are in agreement with those reported from other studies, such as snoring or obstructive sleep apneas 17-19,21,22,33.34 and depressed mood. 15,21,22 In the current study, peptic ulcer appeared as a significant correlate with PLMS, which was not reported in any pervious studies. It is too early, however, to confirm this finding because the number of those with peptic ulcers was small.…”

“…In a large study including 78 patients, Hornyak et al [126] observed that PLMS have a low impact on the subjects' perception of sleep quality. Moreover, two studies have shown a lack of correlation between the severity of PLMS and the mean sleep latency on the MSLT in patients with EDS [127,128]. PLMS and arousals are frequently associated.…”

“…In addition, PLMS are also found in many other sleep disorders, especially among those involving a dopaminergic impairment [7]such as narcolepsy [8], and REM sleep behaviour disorder [9]. They are also present in sleep apnea syndrome [10]and in a large percentage of uncomplaining subjects, especially with advancing age [7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17]. Therefore, the diagnostic value of the PLMS index for RLS remains uncertain.…”
