Periosteal expansion of rabbit mandible with an osmotic self-inflatable expander

Abstract: We aimed to evaluate a new technique for intraoral expansion of soft tissue with a self-inflatable expander in rabbits. We placed a self-inflatable soft tissue expander bilaterally in eight rabbits under the periosteum of the mandible through an extraoral approach. The expander was left to self-inflate for two weeks, after which the animals were killed and specimens collected for histological examination. The self-inflatable soft tissue expanders expanded the periosteum. There were no dehiscences or infections… Show more

“…The perichondrium has the potential for chondrogenesis, 18 and after hematoma formation (perichondrium detachment from the cartilage), activated perichondrium-resident stem cells may fill the dead space with chondrogenesis, fibrosis, and/or ossification. Secondly, new bone formation at the edge of a tissue expander was experimentally demonstrated in rabbits, 19 and this bone formation was induced by activated periosteal stem cells in the elevated periosteum. We also confirmed the presence of osteogenesis at the edge of a tissue expander after human scalp expansion (Fig.…”

“…Cauliflower ear (wrestler's ear) is a result of chondroneogenesis after hematoma between the auricular cartilage and skin, while osteogenesis is frequently seen at the edge of a tissue expander after scalp expansion [47]. In these cases, new tissue is generated between the perichondrium and cartilage or the periosteum and bone, respectively.…”

“…In vitro studies have demonstrated constant expansion rates, achieving increases of up to 30 times the original size . Subsequent animal studies have demonstrated that self‐inflating expanders can create a surplus of soft tissue, facilitating coverage of bone grafts . Additionally, a higher microvessel density in the surrounding soft tissue is described, thus promoting faster osseointegration…”
