Periostin overexpression is associated with worse prognosis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma from endemic area: a cohort study

Abstract: PurposeNasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a heterogeneous disease. We searched for genes that function in cell adhesion in GSE12452, a published transcriptomic database. We found that POSTN, which encodes periostin (POSTN), was significantly upregulated in NPC tumorigenesis. Herein, we sought to analyze the expression of POSTN and its prognostic significances in patients with NPC.Materials and methodsIn this single-institution retrospective study, we determined and analyzed POSTN expression by immunohistochemis… Show more

“…After applying our methodology, we obtain a signature composed of just one gene, MUC4, differentially expressed to separate tumor and healthy tissue. This is consistent with studies that point out MUC4 as a cancer biomarker [ 103 , 104 ]. Overall, the signature identified has a global accuracy of 1.0, with 1.0 MCC.…”

“…Although there are no reports of POSTN overexpression in hCh-1, our study is the first to suggest that genes related to cadherin binding are up-regulated in cells expressing POSTN. Calcium ion binding has also been recognized as a player in cell adhesion in conjunction with POSTN overexpression (46). Apart from its role in cell adhesion, POSTN has also been implicated in structural molecule activity (46).…”

“…Calcium ion binding has also been recognized as a player in cell adhesion in conjunction with POSTN overexpression (46). Apart from its role in cell adhesion, POSTN has also been implicated in structural molecule activity (46). In an attempt to dissect out the impact of hPOSTN-001 on global gene expression profiles, we compared the hPOSTN-001 cells and vehicle cells, because the former had significantly higher expression of isoform 1.…”

“…Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a common malignant head and neck tumor in southern China, North Africa and Southeast Asia,13 and the incidence rate of NPC is up to 0.2% 4,5. The etiology of NPC development and progression may be closely related to geographic areas, genetic factors, environmental factors and Epstein–Barr virus infection 6,7.…”
