Periphytic algae of the Garças Lake, Upper Paraná River floodplain: comparing the years 1994 and 2004

Abstract: The changes imposed by dams on hydrological regime, water transparence and nutrient concentrations downstream affect biodiversity in relation to species richness and specific composition of the community. The aim of this work was evaluate this effect on periphyton, comparing richness and composition of periphytic algae in the Garças Lake, Upper Paraná River floodplain, between the years 1994, before construction of the Porto Primavera Reservoir, and after its operation in 2004. This floodplain lake showed an i… Show more

“…Periphyton response to disturbances, such as flood pulse, depends on the intensity of the event (Biggs and Thomsen, 1995;Rodrigues and Bicudo, 2004). “…In general, richness of periphytic algae in the lakes studied was greater during high water periods than low water periods, as shown by the positive significant correlation between periphytic algae richness and the level of the Paraná River, and by the analyses of variance. Rodrigues and Bicudo (2004) and Leandrini et al (2008) observed that the periphytic biomass in the Upper Paraná River floodplain was more influenced by hydrological periods, especially in high water. Fonseca and Rodrigues (2005) and Algarte et al (2006) observed that both periphyton density and richness in the Upper Paraná River floodplain were more influenced by hydrological periods than any other factor.…”

“…Colonization process has been found to be influenced by different factors such as wave energy, type of the substrata, as well as size, immigration and reproduction rate of periphytic organisms (Á cs and Kiss, 1993;Á cs et al, 2000;Albay and Akc¸allan, 2003). Many recent studies have been undertaken to determine the responses of periphyton to the changes in hydrologic levels in tropical floodplains and results clearly showed that flood pulse constitutes the principal force acting directly on the colonization processes and successive patterns of periphytic communities (Rodrigues and Bicudo, 2001;Algarte et al, 2009;Murakami et al, 2009). However, seasonality of the periphytic algae colonization has not yet been investigated in detail.…”

“…The availability of these food items is associated to the high transparency of Paraná subsystem water. As stated previously, this transparency has favored submerse aquatic macrophytes colonization and by consequence the establishment of periphytic algae, mainly filamentous algae (Murakami et al, 2009;Neif et al, 2014). Macrophytes and filamentous algae were not food items observed in its native areas (Agostinho et al, 2015), nor in the tributaries (i.e.…”
