Permeability and Thermal Conductivity of Compact Adsorbent of Salts for Sorption Refrigeration

Abstract: Properties, such as thermal conductivity and permeability, are important for the heat and mass transfer performance in sorption refrigeration. This Technical Brief investigates the thermal conductivity and permeability of eight types of chlorides, which are consolidated with expanded natural graphite (ENG) for the heat transfer intensification.

“…In addition to this, the sorbent materials are poor heat conductors, as their effective thermal conductivity is reported to vary between 0.1 and 1.3 W m –1 K –1 . To overcome the abovementioned challenges, the thermochemical salts can be mixed with porous matrices, among which the most extensively studied are vermiculite, activated carbon, , silica gel, , and expanded natural graphite (ENG). , For a thorough literature review on the matrices for composite materials, the reader is referred to the work of Jarimi et al In particular, ENG has been identified as one of the best matrix materials for improving heat and mass transfer within the reactive bed, as it has high in-plane thermal conductivity and permeability . Moreover, ENG acts as a stabilizer for the salt particles and thus prevents the expansion of the reactive bed, which could be detrimental for the system safety. , …”

“…The steady-state heat source method had been utilised by Tamainot-Telto and Critoph [11,12], leading to the thermal conductivity up to 0.44 W/(m.K). Jiang et al [13,14] investigated thermal conductivity and permeability of eight different chlorides with ENG and compared the properties of different consolidated composite sorbents in the sorption process. Nonetheless, due to the characteristics of anisotropic heat and mass transfer performance, some testing method may cause some inaccuracies.…”

“…Jiang et al [3,9] comprehensively investigated thermal conductivity and permeability of eight different chlorides with ENG, and compared the properties among different composite sorbents in the sorption process. Recently, expanded natural graphite treated by sulfuric acid (ENG-TSA) was introduced to further improve the heat and mass transfer performance of the metal chlorides [10,11].…”
