“…The larger bivalvemarine cement build-ups in Wegener Halvù Sequences 2 and 3 differ from more southerly located build-ups in the Zechstein basin of Europe and the Permian Capitan Reef of southern USA (e.g. Smith, 1981a,b;Mazzullo, 1995) by being smaller and much less diversi®ed.…”

“…This is reflected in the very different geometries of modern cool‐ and warm‐water carbonate platforms and their different response to changes in relative sea level (James, 1997). Such differences have been recorded between Permian open shelf, cool‐water carbonates dominated by bryozoans, brachiopods and crinoids, and rimmed shelf, warm‐water carbonates with a more diverse biota including abundant calcareous algae and calcisponges (Mazzullo, 1995; Beauchamp & Desrochers, 1997; Stemmerik, 1997). The Upper Permian Wegener Halvø Formation carbonates of central East Greenland were deposited at a palaeolatitude of approximately 32–35°N (Scotese & McKerrow, 1990; Scholle et al ., 1993), close to the confluence of the equatorial and mid‐latitude atmospheric circulation cells.…”

“…The evaporites of the Lower San Andres Formation were deposited in shallow water to subaerially exposed environments (Hovorka, 1987). The San Andres Formation is lowermost Guadalupian in age, estimated to be ϳ274 Ma and equivalent to the Ufimian Stage (Mazzullo, 1995;Menning, 1995). Rb-Sr data from early diagenetic clays in Lower San Andres Unit 4 gave an age of 275 Ϯ 1 Ma (Long et al, 1997).…”

“…The stratigraphic record for this region is well-constrained due to conodont and fusulinid biostratigraphic studies (e.g., Ross, 1963;Ross, 1995;, which allows for accurate correlations with the U.S. Midcontinent (e.g., . An erosional unconformity marks the boundary between Pennsylvanian and Permian strata in the Permian Basin (Candelaria et al, 1992;Fitchen et al, 1995;Mazzullo, 1995;Hill, 1996;Harrell and Lambert, 2007; Figure 2). In places, the boundary is expressed as an angular unconformity, which has been attributed to tectonic activity related to the final phase of thrusting within the Marathon orogenic belt (Ross, 1986;Hill, 1996).…”

“…that existed as a segmented foreland basin during the late Palaeozoic. These relatively deep basins contain some of the most complete Permian sections in northern Pangea (Fitchen et al, 1995;Mazzullo, 1995;Hill, 1996). During the PPT, the region was located within 5 o of the palaeoequator ; Fig.…”
