Peroxidase-like activity of chitosan stabilized silver nanoparticles for visual and colorimetric detection of glucose

Abstract: Chitosan stabilized silver nanoparticles (Ch-Ag NPs) were successfully synthesized by a one-step method and were found to possess intrinsic peroxidase-like activity, could catalytically oxidize substrates, such as TMB, and OPD, by H(2)O(2) to produce a typical colour reaction such as from colorless to blue for TMB and from colorless to red for OPD. Our results demonstrate that the Ch-Ag NPs exhibit higher thermal and pH durance than HRP, thus could be suitable in a wider range of harsh conditions. Results of e… Show more

“…Noble metal nanomaterials (e.g., Au and Ag) have been commonly used to develop highly sensitive colorimetric probes for the determination of biomolecules 21,22 , drugs 23 , toxicants [24][25][26][27][28] and small molecules [29][30][31] due to their optical and electrical properties and biocompatibility 32,33 . Ag nano materials are more cost effective in their preparation than Au nano materials.…”

“…Inspired by this, more and more nanomaterials have also been proven to possess unexpected peroxidase-like activities for potential applications in biomedical and environmental detection. These nanomaterials include magnetic NPs [7,8], noble metal NPs [9][10][11], and carbon nanomaterials [12]. Similarly, molybdenum disulfide nanosheets (MoS 2 -NSs) as a two-dimensional layered-structure have also been found to exhibit excellent peroxidase-like activity and further used to construct an optical hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) assay [13,14].…”

“…Most recently, Jiang et al described the use of unmodified Au NPs as a colorimetric probe for the recognition of Cd 2+ ion in water and rice samples [30]. Recent years, few attempts have been made to obtain stable Au and Ag NPs through surface functionalization with chitosan for colorimetric detection of Hg 2+ ion [31] in environmental and glucose [32] in biological samples. These reports inspired us to functionalize Au NPs with chitosan dithiocarbamate (CSDTC-Au NPs) for the selective colorimetric detection of metal ions.…”
