Peroxomonosulphate initiated graft copolymerization of o‐toluidine onto nylon 6 and wool fibers—A kinetic approach

Abstract: Chemical polymerization of o-toluidine (OT) in the presence of nylon 6 and wool fibers initiated by peroxomonosulphate (PMS) in an aqueous acidic medium was carried out under nitrogen atmosphere. During the polymerization process, graft copolymers were formed along with homopolymers of OT. A procedure is given for the separation of poly(o-toluidine) (POT) grafted fiber from the homopolymer. Rate of homopolymerization (R h ), rate of grafting (R g ), percentage grafting, and percentage grafting efficiency were … Show more

“…In recent years copolymerization is also considered as an important method to improve the properties of homopolymers. Copolymerization of ANI with substituted anilines, which bear various functional groups, leads to modified copolymers, which show electrochemical characteristics considerably different from those of the homopolymers [25][26][27][28][29]. The primary advantage of copolymerization is that the properties of the resulting material (copolymer) can be regulated by adjusting the ratio of the monomer concentrations [30].…”

“…Copolymerization greatly increases the ability of polymer scientists to tailor a material with specific properties as the synthesized copolymers show electrochemical characteristics quite different from those of the homopolymers [6][7][8][9]. Consequently copolymerization is also considered to be an important method to improve the properties of homopolymers.…”

“…However, the mechanism of the reactions in PP matrices are not yet well understood because of multiple competing side reactions like crosslinking, chain scission, and carbonylation,22–24 the relative contributions of which are determined by, for example, the nature of the polymer and the peroxide type and concentrations. We report here a probable mechanism for the PDS initiated graft copolymerization of aniline onto PP fiber in aqueous acidic medium based on our earlier reports 25, 26…”

“…We report here a probable mechanism for the PDS initiated graft copolymerization of aniline onto PP fiber in aqueous acidic medium based on our earlier reports. 25,26 It is believed that in PP, grafting takes place through the abstraction of hydrogen from the ϾCOH group because of its greater reactivity than that of -CH 2 and -CH 3 groups. Grafting of ANI onto PP takes place through a free-radical path.…”
