“…Our much earlier works showed their ubiquitous presence in environmental and biological niches in India (Ramesh et al, 1989;Subramanian et al, 1999;Tanabe et al, 1993). These and other publications on POPs in India were extensively reviewed already .…”

“…Many earlier literature is available from India on the coastal line pollution by persistent chemicals like OC pesticides and some other classical organochlorines like PCBs, HCB, CHLs, etc. Takeoka et al, 1991;Babu Rajendran et al, 1992;Tanabe et al, 1993;Kan-Atireklap et al, 1998;Subramanian et al, 1999;Minh et al, 2000;Sudaryanto et al, 2002;Monirith et al, 2003). In the last decade, studies were conducted on the coastal line pollution in India by the scientists from our laboratory and also jointly with our collaborators in China, by collecting and analyzing the samples like, atmospheric air, mussels and coastal marine mammals (Ramu et al, 2007;Zhang et al, 2008;Kajiwara et al, 2006;Paromita et al, 2010) for the analysis of some classical and novel organohalogen compounds.…”

“…Tanabe et al [68] and Takeoka et al [69] evaluated the transport of HCHs from land to sea in a paddy field and adjoining estuarine systems in southern India and found out that major portion of the HCHs used is removed to the air and contribute both to the regional and global pollution. A series of studies from other workers showed the existence of various pesticides in samples of air [70][71][72][73], water [70,[74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85], soil and sediments [69][70][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96][97][98] wildlife including dolphins, sharks and mussels [99][100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107], fish [106,108,109] birds [88,…”

“…OCPs are currently less widely used than it used to be, because of a number of disadvantages including environmental persistence, bioaccumulation and their toxic action upon the reproductive and nervous systems (Danzo, 1998;Hellawell, 1988;Yamaguchi et al, 2003). Contamination by OCPs such as DDT, HCHs, HCB has been reported in water, sediment and aquatic birds (Barlas, 1999(Barlas, , 2002Ayaş et al, 1997) foodstuffs (Kannan et al,1995;Singh and Gupta, 2002) wildlife (Ramaseh et al, 1992;Tanabe et al, 1993) drinking water (Badach et al, 2000) human adipose tissue (Ç ok et al, 1998) and human milk (Ç ok et al, 1997, 2004) . There is evidence of the bioconcentration of some OCPs in the higher tropic levels of terrestrial and aquatic food chains, especially in fish and birds (Barlas, 1999;Ayaş et al, 1997;Liguoro et al, 2002;Manosa et al, 2003).…”
