Governments commit substantial time and resources engaging individuals and households to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. These approaches, based largely upon behaviour change theories, have been criticised for their limited reach and effectiveness by practice theorists who have offered an alternative approach, broadening the focus beyond individuals. While practice theory has provided valuable insights into the energy consuming activities of households it has gained limited traction as a way to analyse and inform government practices and policy making. We address this by applying a practice lens to climate change community engagement practices performed by Australian local governments. Drawing on 29 interviews with practitioners and analysis of 37 Australian local government climate strategies, we examine the bundle of practices that constitute climate change community engagement: recruitment, engagement and evaluation. We consider how these practices are situated vis-a-vis other climate governance practices (regulation, service delivery, infrastructure provision and advocacy) as well as internal local government processes. Using a practice lens reveals the weaknesses in current engagement approaches which we contend are limiting efficacy. We draw upon Spurling et al.’s conceptualisation of re-crafting, re-integrating and substituting practices to consider how climate change community engagement practices might be reconfigured to improve their effectiveness.

This review forms the background to explore and to gain empirical support among lecturers to improve the students’ critical thinking skills in business education courses in Malaysia, in which the main teaching and learning methodology is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). The PBL educational approach is known to have maximum positive impacts in producing professional competencies among graduates in many educational disciplines. However, there is limited discussion about PBL pedagogical approaches implemented in business education. This approach has not been established as a major pedagogical method in schools of business around the world. However, there are a few schools of business that use the implementation of PBL in their curriculum structures. Studies that focused on that issue are implemented in various aspects, courses and using various methodologies. There are various materials which relate to PBL and critical thinking skills. However, in Malaysia, the material is limited because of the lack of research relating to this methodology and lack of research documentations. In Malaysia, the PBL method is only being practised at higher institutions of learning, and it is only limited to certain fields. The analysis of this part tends to discuss PBL in tertiary education, examining the mechanism of the popular educational approach of PBL. The analysis of PBL is intended to see if it may offer any solutions to problems encountered in various education, and to focus on its potential for implementation and impact on critical thinking skills in teaching business education.

Stimulating pre-service teacher academic achievement through problembased learning (PBL)

This study is focused on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) methodology and academic achievement due to the fact that academic achievement is a core learning process which also involves a problem solving task. A quasiexperimental design was employed in this study, where 45 pre-service teachers undertaking a B. Ed (Economics) were randomly assigned to the experimental (n=23) and control groups (n=22). The PBL method was utilised in the experimental group while the traditional learning method was utilised in the control group. The analysis focused on comparisons between the PBL and traditional learning groups in terms of their Academic Achievement Test (AAT), a series of one-way between group analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) tests, in which pre-AAT was used as a covariate when looking at differences between the PBL and TL groups in mid-and post-AAT. Regarding the effects of PBL on pres-service teachers' academic achievement as measured by an instrument, the AAT showed at baseline no differences existed between the two groups. The PBL method yielded significantly higher Achievement scores at mid-intervention and post-intervention test, which indicated better students' academic achievement. The study findings showed the positive effects of PBL towards pre-service teachers' performance in academic on Business Education in Malaysia.
