Personality profile of child synaesthetes

Abstract: Correspondence to L.Rinaldi@sussex.ac.uk PERSONALITY OF CHILD SYNAESTHETESOpenness to Experience, a personality trait linked to intelligence and creativity. Both synaesthesia subtypes showed this feature, supporting previous research in adults (1-3). We additionally found low Extraversion in grapheme-colour synaesthetes and high Conscientiousness in sequencepersonality synaesthetes. We discuss our results with reference to earlier recruitment issues, and as to how perceptual differences such as synaesthesia mi… Show more

“…There is growing evidence suggesting the possible relationship between synesthesia and psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and even schizophrenia ( 15 ). Moreover, a recent study by Rinaldi et al demonstrated that synesthesia is more likely to be related to specific personality traits, including openness to experience among the pediatric population ( 16 ). In our approach for evaluating the case, we first differentiated the acquired types from developmental forms of synesthesia.…”

“…Measures of child-reported personality (and related theories; Mervielde et al, 1995) suit children 8+ years, hence the age of our child participants in this study. This child version provides age-appropriate definitions for 14 vocabulary items, so they are understandable to even the youngest children (e.g., in the item "I see myself as someone who generates a lot of enthusiasm," the final word is defined as "This means getting excited about things"; see Rinaldi et al, 2020). This adaptation was validated by Rinaldi and colleagues (Rinaldi et al, 2020) and was based originally on adult/ adolescent versions of the BFI-44 (John et al, 1991(John et al, , 2008Soto et al, 2008).…”

Cronbach's alphas show moderate reliability for all components (openness, a = .68; conscientiousness, a = .70; extraversion, a = .66; agreeableness, a = .73; and neuroticism, a = .68), and the instrument has concurrent validity in a number of ways (e.g., neuroticism positively correlates with children's anxiety at r = .41, using the SCARED questionnaire; Birmaher, En, Balach, & Neer, 1997;Birmaher et al, 1999).…”

“…The social structure and interpersonal relationship caused by family poverty affect children's physical and brain development through repeated pressure, which leads to social replication or intergenerational transmission of poverty, so that parents' social class can predict children's social class. Rinaldi et al [ 3 ] believe that the problem of poor children has become a hot and important issue in the new era. It is of theoretical and practical significance to study the influencing factors of poor children's psychological development.…”
