Personalized Self-Monitoring of Energy Balance through Integration in a Web-Application of Dietary, Anthropometric, and Physical Activity Data

Abstract: Self-monitoring of weight, diet and physical activity is a valuable component of behavioral weight loss treatment. The validation and user-friendliness of this approach is not optimal since users are selected from homogeneous pools and rely on different applications, increasing the burden and achieving partial, generic and/or unrelated information about their metabolic state. Moreover, studies establishing type, time, duration, and adherence criteria for self-monitoring are lacking. In this study, we developed… Show more

“…Change is difficult, time consuming, and resource intensive. In this context, technology can aid in the support and maintenance of healthy behaviors: smart wearable devices can monitor and provide feedback on energy intake and expenditure [ 8 ]. To accurately measure the VO 2 max parameter, tests in which effort and duration put a strain on the aerobic energy system are required.…”

“…Smartphone applications can potentially improve the delivery of health behavior modification interventions to large groups of people, resulting in a favorable cost-utility ratio [ 26 ]. Furthermore, these devices will help those who wish to be healthy and change their lifestyles as measurement and feedback systems are becoming more refined and individualized [ 27 ].…”

“…Moreover, it consumes time and effort to achieve change. Solutions that are focused on improved nutrition and enhancement of physical activity could be only successful if individuals receive personalized information that can be transformed into practical activities with a result that can be measured and related to their physiological status [ 181 , 182 ]. Over the last decade, technological applications and devices have aided in the maintenance of healthy behaviors.…”

“…Over the last decade, technological applications and devices have aided in the maintenance of healthy behaviors. Web-based weight loss intervention programs helped many people to reduce their BMI scores [ [182] , [183] , [184] ]. For example, ArmOnIA is an online digital tool that incorporates dietary, anthropometric, and physical activity data and produces an individual’s estimation of energy balance [ 182 ].…”
