Reflective function is the capacity to reflect on one's own thoughts and feelings, and those of others. Parental reflective function has been found significant for children's social and emotional development. However, research has mostly been restricted to mothers and to early stages of development, and there is a paucity of observations on the effects of parental reflective function in later stages. The aim of the present study is to explore the significance of mothers' and fathers' reflective function for the adjustment of their children during early adulthood. It is an extension of a previous study that examined the significance of parental reflective function for adolescent adjustment. During home visits, 105 adolescents aged 14-18 years reported on indices of parental behavior (involvement, warmth, and control), and their fathers and mothers were interviewed in order to assess their reflective function. Three to five years later, the participants, now aged 18-22 years, reported on level of symptoms, selfperception, self-descriptions and romantic relations. The findings indicated that parental reflective function, but not parental behaviors that express warmth and control, predicted adjustment during early adulthood. Similar to our previous finding, parental reflective function was associated with both desirable outcomes and possible costs among young adults: higher levels of self-descriptions and romantic relations, on the one hand, and more internalizing problems and less positive self-perception, on the other. It is concluded that parental reflective function affects their children's adjustment also during early adulthood. However, the benefits of reflective function are inextricably linked to its costs.

-Validity evidence of the Portuguese version of the Interpersonal Reactivity Index for CouplesThe main objective of this study was to translate and adapt the Interpersonal Reactivity Index for Couples (IRIC) to Portuguese, and analyze the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version. This instrument that assesses empathy in couples, resulted from the adaptation of one of the most widely used empathy scales -Davis´s Interpersonal Reactivity Index -for the context of intimate relationships. The IRIC assesses dimensions of cognitive (perspective taking) and emotional (empathic concern) empathy, both essential for stable and satisfactory marital relationships. The original scale was translated to Portuguese and administered to 148 participants involved in an intimate relationship with a minimum duration of one year. Most of the participants were women, with a mean age of 27 years old. Our results revealed the Portuguese version has a factorial structure similar to the original version, adequate internal consistency values (Cronbach's α=.82), and good external validity with a scale of dyadic adjustment. RESUMEN -Evidencia de validad de la versión portuguesa del Índice de Reactividad Interpersonal en ParejasEl principal objetivo de este estudio fue traducir y adaptar a la lengua portuguesa el Índice de Reactividad Interpersonal para Parejas (IRIP), analizando las propiedades psicométricas de la versión portuguesa. Este es un instrumento de evaluación de empatía en parejas, que resultó de la adaptación de una de las más usadas escalas de empatía, el Índice de Reactividad de Davis, para el contexto de las relaciones íntimas. El IRIP evalúa dimensiones de empatía cognitiva (toma de perspectiva) y emocional (preocupación empática), importantes para la estabilidad y satisfacción de las relaciones conyugales. La escala original fue traducida al portugués y administrada a 148 sujetos que mantenían una relación amorosa desde hace por lo menos un año. La mayoría de los sujetos eran mujeres con una edad media de 27 años. Los resultados revelaron una estructura factorial semejante a la escala original, valores adecuados de consistencia interna (Cronbach's α=.82) y buenos niveles de validación externa con una escala de ajustamiento diádico. Perspective Taking and Specificity of Sensory Contact in Romantic Relationships

In two studies, we examined the effects of perspective taking aimed at one's romantic partner, and type of romantic relationship (long-distance vs. geographically close) on sensory specificity. Sensory specificity is defined as selectivity in using sensory dimensions such as visual, acoustical, or tactile, in romantic interactions. Participants were undergraduate students involved in exclusive romantic relationships. In Study 1 (N = 210), a perspective-taking orientation to the partner enhanced sensory selectivity in both types of relationships. In Study 2 (N = 120), in which perspective taking was manipulated, perspective taking caused an increase in sensory specificity for partners living in the same location, and not for those in long-distance relationships. These findings underscore the importance of studying perspective taking in the context of sensory-based romantic interactions. Implications and future directions are discussed.
