Pervaporation Zeolite-Based Composite Membranes for Solvent Separations

Abstract: Thanks to their well-defined molecular sieving and stability, zeolites have been proposed in selective membrane separations, such as gas separation and pervaporation. For instance, the incorporation of zeolites into polymer phases to generate composite (or mixed matrix) membranes revealed important advances in pervaporation. Therefore, the goal of this review is to compile and elucidate the latest advances (over the last 2-3 years) of zeolite applications in pervaporation membranes either combining zeolites or… Show more

“…It can substitute conventional methods, such as liquid-liquid extraction and distillation, which are difficult or costly in the purification of mixtures [103]. The PV process mainly depends on the use of a membrane with high potential for purifying substances that degrade/decompose at high temperatures, downstream of which a pressure gradient (vacuum) is applied to promote the diffusion and transfer of substances [104][105][106].…”

“…Zeolites are crystalline aluminosilicate materials composed of primary elements, including potassium, sodium, magnesium, and calcium [ 42 ]. High void volume, elevated surface area, and uniform distribution of pore size led them to be tested as fillers of polymer matrix for membrane-based methods [ 43 ]. The introduction of zeolites makes it possible to reduce polymer swelling and enhance the dehydration performance of PV membranes.…”

“…The advent of organic–inorganic hybrid materials, blending the high permeability of inorganic substances with the hydrophobicity of organic materials, has led to the creation of composite selective layers that enhance the separation performance of PV membranes. Various inorganic particles, including zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), , zeolites, , silica, , and graphene, , have been incorporated into the polymer matrix, demonstrating improved separation performance in these hybrid membranes with the addition of inorganic particles. Therefore, enhancing the separation factor of PDMDES membranes by incorporating hydrophobic inorganic particles into their matrixes can be a promising strategy.…”
