Perylene diimide self-assembly: From electronic structural modulation to photocatalytic applications

Abstract: As an emerging organic semiconductor, perylene diimide (PDI) self-assembly has attracted tremendous attention in the aspects of solar cells, sensors, fluorescence probes and n-transistors, etc. In term of photocatalysis, various photocatalysts based on PDI self-assembly exhibit some unique properties, such as intrinsic Π-Π stacking structure, fast internal charge transfer, band-like electronic structure, flexible structural modifiability, well-defined morphological adjustability and excellent light absorption.… Show more

“…However, these photocatalysts are not considered excellent photocatalytic HER candidates for the following reasons 9 , 24 . (1) Their reduction potential is insufficient to satisfy HER thermodynamic requirements 25 , 26 . (2) The lack of a driving force leads to the severe recombination of photogenerated carriers 27 .…”

“…[2,20] PDIs may effectively form π-conjugated structures, and it was noted that this feature has a major impact on their photocatalytic activities. [25] Recently, PDIs have been also exploited in the field of organo-photocatalysis. In this regard, a simple symmetrical PDI, namely A (Figure 1b), turned out to be the dye of choice to drive most of the photochemical reactions reported so far.…”

“…In recent years, PDIs have attracted considerable attention within the scientific community as low price alternatives to metal‐based photocatalysts for energy production [2,20] . PDIs may effectively form π‐conjugated structures, and it was noted that this feature has a major impact on their photocatalytic activities [25] . Recently, PDIs have been also exploited in the field of organo‐photocatalysis.…”
