Pesticides in Canals of South Florida

Abstract: Atrazine, ametryn, bromacil, simazine and norflurazon were the most frequently detected pesticides in surface water samples and DDE, DDD and ametryn were the most frequently detected pesticides in sediment samples collected over the period November 1991 to June 1995 in a monitoring network that includes 27 stations in south Florida canals. The 744 pesticide detections during this time period represent about 2% of the total number of analytical determinations. Many of the most frequently detected compounds were… Show more

“…Atrazine is one of the most frequently detected pesticides in surface water and sediment samples collected in the United States, the highest concentrations found being 18 ppb and 50 ppb, respectively. 62) WHO has established an international guideline for atrazine in drinking-water of 2 ppb. 63) Concentrations of alkylphenol ethoxylate metabolites in treated wastewater effluents in the US, Spain, and the UK ranged from <0.1 to 369 ppb, with a much larger range for sediments.…”

“…In the laboratory, before the solid-phase extraction, the water samples were filtered in a 0.45 μm cellulose nitrate membrane filter, the pH was adjusted between 6.5 and 7.5 with 1 mol L -1 HCl and the NaCl was added to ionic strength correction (17.5%, m/v). The sampling sites were irrigation and drinking water wells (23), waterholes (5), dam (2) and Cabeceira dos Bois river (3). Numbers between parenthesis represent number of sampling points at each sampling sites.…”

“…The combined standard deviation (s comb ) was calculated using equation (2). (2) where s A is the standard deviation of the measured concentrations at the lowest fortification level used in the recovery experiment; m is the number of replicates at the lowest fortification level; s B is the standard deviation of the responses of the blank determinations and n is the number of blank determinations.…”

“…However, it is evident from chemical monitoring programs in South Florida that organic and inorganic contaminants are present at concentrations in surface waters and sediment that may present potential adverse effects and risks to organisms. For example, since the mid-1980s, the SFWMD has been monitoring pesticides in South Florida surface waters and sediment, and several compounds including DDT, DDE, DDD, ametryn, atrazine, dicofol, diquat and endosulfan sulfate were frequently detected (Miles and Pfeuffer, 1997). Detectable residues of endosulfan were consistently present in surface water of one canal location (C-l1l), adjacent to Everglades National Park and occasionally exceeded Florida…”
