Petroleum evolution within the Tarim Basin, northwestern China: Insights from organic geochemistry, fluid inclusions, and rhenium–osmium geochronology of the Halahatang oil field

Abstract: CV Associés Engineering, France for the fluid inclusion analysis and PVTx modelling. DS acknowledges the Total Endowment Fund and the Dida Scholarship from CUG Wuhan. Xiang Ge was supported by a postgraduate award from the China Scholarship Council (CSC). We acknowledge the analytical support of Antonia Hofmann, Geoff Nowell and Chris Ottley. Lastly, we thank Barry J. Katz, Ling Gao and two anonymous reviewers for their constructive reviews which helped improve the paper.

“…Accurate hydrocarbon accumulation dating is an important issue in petroleum geology. Geochemical characteristics, fluid inclusions and reservoir bitumen provide evidences for petroleum accumulation history including hydrocarbon charge, physical adjustment and destroy (Hein, 2016;Ge et al, 2020;Ping et al, 2020;Su et al, 2020;Yang et al, 2021). In this study, we have compiled the timing of the formation of deep oil and gas reservoirs around the world, and oil and gas accumulation timing vary from 550 Ma to 12 Ma.…”

“…A great deal of emerging technical and analytical methods have been applied in hydrocarbon-related studies, and equip enormous potential to bring new insights into the above-mentioned challenges. Advances in radiogenic isotopic geochronology, especially the advent of carbonate U-Pb dating and oil/bitumen Re-Os dating, provide absolute ages in constraining the precise timing of hydrocarbon generation (Selby and Creaser, 2005;Finlay et al, 2011;Ge et al, 2020), migration and charging (Holdsworth et al, 2019;Rochelle-Bates et al, 2020;Cong et al, 2022), diagenetic sequences (Godeau et al, 2018;MacDonald et al, 2019), with high resolution which other techniques cannot compare. Development of new stable isotope tracers, such as organic and inorganic sulfur isotopes, clumped isotopes (Δ47, Δ18, etc.)…”

“…In this paper, on the basis of systematic sampling and research on the characteristics of the low-permeability sandstone reservoirs of the Mesozoic Yanchang Formation in the Zhijing-Ansai area [ 20 ], the microscopic petrographic observation of fluid inclusions, microthermometry characteristics, and burial and thermal history are used to discuss. The stages of oil and gas migration and charging in the Mesozoic Yanchang Formation and the determination of reservoir formation time [ 21 ]. The research results help to understand the oil and gas accumulation mechanism of the Yanchang Formation in the Zhijing Ansai area of the Ordos Basin, and can provide theoretical support for the next step of oil and gas exploration in favorable areas in this area.…”

“…The asphaltene of crude oils has over 90% of Re and Os elements due to their organophilic characteristics (Mahdaoui et al, 2013) and almost represents the entire crude oil isotopic composition of Re and Os (Selby et al, 2007). The organic-rich geological samples related to hydrocarbon accumulation, such as source rocks and asphalt, can be directly tested and analyzed by Re and Os isotope dating for petroleum accumulation geochronology (Selby and Creaser, 2005;Liu et al, 2018;Ge et al, 2020;Wu et al, 2021). In this study, the asphalts were researched to explore the possible hydrocarbon sources and accumulation processes in the Ruoqiang Sag, combined with the source rocks of the drilling core and outcrops.…”
