In contemporary debates, it is regularly overlooked that working from home already has a long history, while the phenomenon of ‘tele(home) working’ has even gained momentum since the 1970s, being increasingly technologically enabled and socially prepared. This article aims to identify the self-perpetuation of work from home by investigating phases, turning points and diverging temporalities of gender- and parenthood-specific discourses and use patterns of tele(home)work in Germany and the United Kingdom from an interdisciplinary perspective, combining historical and comparative social analysis.

ZusammenfassungNetzgebundene Infrastrukturen, wie Strom-, Daten-, Straßen- oder Schienennetze, Wasser- oder Gasleitungen, sind zentrale Voraussetzung der Daseinsvorsorge. Deren Nutzung als auch deren Errichtung (graue Energie) sind Hauptverursacher der Treibhausgasemissionen. Planung und Bereitstellung von Infrastrukturen ist dementsprechend ein bedeutender Faktor in der Gestaltung eines klimafreundlichen Lebens. Insbesondere in den Bereichen Energie und Mobilität besteht für Betreiber von Netzinfrastrukturen eine Gemeinwohlverpflichtung, im Auftrag der öffentlichen Hand. Auf dieser Basis und als Mehrheitseigentümer von zentralen Unternehmen in Österreich wie ÖBB, ASFINAG, APG, Wiener Netze und vielen weiteren Verteilernetzbetreibern in den Bundesländern hat die öffentliche Hand vielfältige gestalterische Möglichkeiten. Vor diesem Hintergrund beschäftigt sich dieses Kapitel mit der Frage, inwieweit die Gestaltung und Bereitstellung von Netzinfrastrukturen ein klimafreundliches Leben ermöglichen oder verhindern und welche Gestaltungsoptionen sich in Österreich aus sozialwissenschaftlicher Sicht ergeben, um die nationalen Klimaziele zu erreichen.
