pH induced stress enhances lipid accumulation in microalgae grown under mixotrophic and autotrophic condition

Abstract: Production of biodiesel together with wastewater treatment and CO2 sequestration is a promising technology. The growing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increase the amount of dissolved CO2 in natural watercourses, triggering the increase in concentrations of bicarbonate and hydrogen ions while dropping those of carbonate and hydroxyl ions. The active carbon cycling in coastal areas, which can result in periodic and daily fluctuations in pH and CO2 concentrations that may surpass those anticipated fo… Show more

“…[52] In the majority of bioreactors, light supply, [50][51][52]81] cell concentration, [82][83][84] CO 2 concentration, [85,86] pH, [87][88][89][90][91] temperature, [52,92] concentration of nutrients, [91] and other parameters are affected by and have an impact on the growth of microorganisms. [89,91,[93][94][95] These systems must be monitored and externally maintained to achieve optimal results [85,95] which adds to the overall cost. [49,96] Combining algae production with the utilization of the nitrogen-rich waste is one way to address this issue.…”

“…In this regard, they have been used as a means of wastewater treatment [112][113][114]. Nutrient availability, temperature, pH, and salinity all influence the growth and lipid yields, as well as the lipid fatty acid profile [115]. In fact, nutritional stress and altering the operational parameters during cultivation are used as effective means to alter the lipid fatty acid profile [116,117] to suit industrial production.…”

“…Under low pH, phytoplankton grows in low to moderate light levels. High pH pressure also accelerates the accumulation of lipids in phytoplankton's body (Alkhamis et al, 2022). Phytoplankton is a well-adapting organism to any changes in aquatic environmental conditions (Irwin et al, 2015).…”
