Pharmacognostic and Phytochemical Studies of Smilax domingensis Willd. in Cuba

Abstract: A preliminary pharmacognostical and phytochemical evaluation of Smilax domingensis Willd., (Smilacaceae) was realized to determine the macromorphology and micromorphology characteristics, the physicochemical and phytochemical parameters from the rhizome of this spice that grows in Cuba. This crude drug showed the characteristic physicochemical values such as moisture content (13.11%), extractable matter in ethanol at 70% (13.53%), total ashes (3.45%), water soluble ashes (2.43%) and acid insoluble ashes (0.64%… Show more

“…The presence of parenchyma tissue, xylematic vessels, fibers and starch granules are reported in S. domingensis from Cuba and Guatemala (Cáceres et al, 2012;González et al, 2017), which was supported by the present study. The difference lies within the morphology and arrangement of these structures.…”

“…TLC results evidenced the presence of chemical compounds type flavonoids, some structures related with terpenoids structures and the presence of phenolic compounds derives from catechol (Yaque et al, 2017). Further studies are needed to establish the molecules responsible for the chemical composition and the biological activities attributed to this rhizome, specially using HPLC-MS or LC-NMR.…”

“…Preliminary phytochemical screening suggested the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, coumarins, catechins, pirochatecolic tannins, fat and/or volatile oils, saponins, triterpens and/or steroid, quinones and reducing sugars, and the absence of resins, amino acids or amines, cardiotonic glycosides, anthocyanidins and astringents and/or bitter principles Data referred here refer to evaluations with wild material in our country (Yaque et al, 2017).…”

“…So it is very essential to analyse pharmacognostic study in plants [8]. Some of the examples for pharmacognostic studies are Tephrosia purpurea root [9]; Ferulasumbul root [10]; rhizome of Smilax domingensis [11]; Mangiferaindica leaf [12]; Diplaziumesculentum leaf [13]; Cissusquadrangularis stem [14]; Argyreiapilosa stem [15]; fruit of Helicteresisora [16]; flowers of Woodfordiafruticosa [17] and Aervalanata [18].The antimicrobial action of plant on microorganisms are due to the presence of certain antimicrobial agents such as alkaloids, flavonoids, volatile oils, gums, tannins, saponins, steroids and some other secondary metabolites present in the plants [19][20][21].Therefore, the studyobjective was to assess pharmacological potentials like phytochemical constituents, antioxidant and antibacterial of the crude and solvent extracts of H.alternataleaves.…”
