Pharmacognostic standardization of Aralia cachemirica: a comparative study

Abstract: Background Aralia cachemirica Decne. is an endemic and an important medicinal plant species of Kashmir Himalaya. Despite having immense medicinal importance, little information is available on the standardization parameters of the species. For this reason, present work was carried out for providing comprehensive report on the quality control and standardization parameters of A. cachemirica. In this connection, different parts (leaves, stem, and root) of the plant were examined. Methods like mic… Show more

“…6 The swelling index of test drug was 1.1% and indicates the presence of gums and mucilage, hemicellulose, or pectin in the natural drug. 5 The ash value of seeds of Tudri surkh (Cheiranthus cheiri) was found to be 6% of the dry weight of the drug. The water soluble and acid insoluble ash values were found to be 1.73% and 1.33% respectively.…”

“…The observed anatomical characteristics of a plant part provide diagnostic characteristics imperative for quality control and standardization of herbal formulations. 5 Physicochemical screening of the test drug that include parameters such as ash value, loss on drying, pH, swelling index and powdered drug reaction with different reagents is equally vital for standardization and quality control of raw plant material employed in the manufacturing of drugs. 6 Loss on drying indicates the amount of moisture content of the drug and in powdered seeds of Tudri surkh (Cheiranthus cheiri) it was found to be 7.6%.…”

“…In the Introduction part, we described about the species of plant, macroscopical, microscopical, preliminary phytochemical, ash values, extractive values, fluorescence analysis are the main tools to identify the purity, presence and absence of certain chemical groups in a herbal drug. Pharmacognostic studies are mainly useful for quality of a herbal drugs [15]. Breakthroughs and Innovations of Calotropis procera is mainly useful for insecticidal, antimalarial antiviral, antimicrobial, analgesic, antifertility, antitumor, antihyperglycemic, hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antidiarrhoeal, anticonvulsant, oestrogenic, antidiabetic and anthelmintic activity etc.…”

“…2 According to the WHO, macroscopic and microscopic images of a medicinal plant are the first step to ensure its identity and purity. 3 Based on the literature search, several pharmacognostic studies have been carried out on Bawang Dayak from three locations, namely, South, Central, and East Kalimantan 4 . This study differs from others because Bawang Dayak is obtained from a specific location in Central Kalimantan, cultivated independently, and tested for determination at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences Research Center for Biology.…”
