Pharmacognostical, antioxidant and antiulcer screening of Cyclea peltata roots

Abstract: Cyclea peltata Hook. f. & Thomson, belongs to the family Menispermaceae commonly known as "paatha", is a climbing shrub found throughout South and East India. In Indian traditional medicine the tuberous roots are also used to treat jaundice, stomachache, fever and asthma. This study deals with the microscopic study of leafs and roots of C. peltata, along with the physico-chemical, preliminary phytochemical analyses and antioxidant properties. Acute oral toxicity study was conducted as per OECD-423 guidelines a… Show more

“…Chellappan et al [23] evaluated the extracts of leaves and roots of C. peltata for physico-chemical, preliminary phytochemical analyses and antioxidant properties. Acute oral toxicity study was conducted as per OECD-423 guidelines and the extract was found to be devoid of any conspicuous acute toxicity in extract treated animals and no mortality up to 2 g/kg by oral route.…”

“…Meena and Santhy [ 7 ] demonstrated that administration of a MeOH extract of Cyclea peltata could increase the activities of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase, and decrease the level of malondialdehyde in liver and kidney tissues of Dalton’s Ascites Lymphoma (DAL) mice. Chellappan et al [ 5 ] also found that the hydroalcoholic extract of C. peltata had a good scavenging effect on ABTS free radicals.…”

“…To ensure the superiority of herbal medicines, appropriate control of starting material is extremely crucial. The first step for assuring quality of starting material is its authentication that may be followed Volume 4 | Number 2 | June | 2014 by developing numerical values of standards for assessment [24,25]. Pharmacognostical evaluation of different parameters is the vital etiquette for standardization of herbals [26].…”
