“…However, Chandler et al (6) recently found peak levels of 9.4 and 7.3 ,ug/ml in their elderly patients after 300-mg oral doses, whereas we observed peak levels of approximately 22 ,ug/ml after 600-mg doses in our elderly subjects. Therefore, our results and those of Chandler et al (6) contrast with the reports of Acocella (1) and Advenier et al (2) and raise the possibility that rifampin has an altered pharmacokinetic profile in elderly individuals.…”

“…Published studies of the pharmacokinetics of rifampin in the elderly are quite limited. Acocella (1) has reported that the peak rifampin level in serum after administration of 600 mg orally is approximately 10 ,ug/ml and that this level is more than twice that associated with a dose of 300 mg. Advenier et al, however, reported a mean peak level of 8.8 ,ug/ml in six elderly volunteers who received single 10-mg/kg doses of rifampin (2). However, Chandler et al (6) recently found peak levels of 9.4 and 7.3 ,ug/ml in their elderly patients after 300-mg oral doses, whereas we observed peak levels of approximately 22 ,ug/ml after 600-mg doses in our elderly subjects.…”

“…Older patients tend to accumulate drugs for longer periods of time, and some might require dosage adjustments. Studies of the pharmacokinetics of RMP and rifapentine in the elderly population, however, do not suggest the need for any dose modifications (15,16).…”
