“…These data strengthen the previous hypothesis that sulfation is likely one of the major metabolic pathways for AP biotransformation in rats (Ye et al, 2011). In addition, other research studies indicate that the compound is metabolized not only in the liver but also in the intestine, including the duodenum, jejunum, and probably the terminal ileum or colon as well (Mehta et al, 2021). This finding involves the effect of first-pass metabolism, which reflects its low oral bioavailability, decreasing the concentration of AP before it enters the blood circulation (Ye et al, 2011).…”

“…Another minor contributor to the low bioavailability could be the expression of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), an efflux transporter, which limits the cellular uptake of xenobiotics. The effect of the competition between AP and other drugs on P-gp-mediated efflux needs to be considered, as co-administration with other medicines could possibly result in a drug interaction that could change the pharmacokinetics and pharmacological therapeutic effects (Mehta et al, 2021).…”

“…A. paniculata , a medicinal plant typically used as an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent, has been studied for its possible impact on the management of DM in humans ( Nugroho et al, 2012 ; Dai et al, 2019 ; Adiguna et al, 2021 ; Hossain et al, 2021 ). Andrographolide is a potential bioactive phytochemical in A. paniculata , which possesses antidiabetic properties ( Nugroho et al, 2012 ; Ji et al, 2016 ; Islam, 2017 ; Naik et al, 2017 ; Mehta et al, 2021 ; Syukri et al, 2021 ). Plasma andrographolide was detected in dogs orally treated with A. paniculata tablets, indicating that andrographolide can be absorbed via the GI tract ( Xu et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Andrographis paniculata is a plant with high chemical diversity, containing diterpenoid lactones, such as the following: several andrographolides; flavonoids, mainly flavanones, flavones, and flavonols; terpenoids, phenolic acids, including ferulic, caffeic, vanillic, and chlorogenic acids; chalcones, xanthones, and volatile compounds [ 140 , 141 ]. Based on its rich chemical diversity, Andrographis paniculata has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, anti-oedema, antioxidant, antihyperglycemic, hepatoprotective, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, antitumoral, immunomodulatory, antihyperlipidemic, contraceptive, neuroprotective, and protective cardiovascular effects [ 140 , 141 , 142 ]. The anti-aging properties of Andrographis paniculata hydroethanolic extract 50% were reported using in vivo, ex vivo, and in vivo clinical studies with thirty-two healthy female volunteers [ 42 ].…”
