BACKGROUND: Recently, sepsis has become a serious problem worldwide. There are many studies trying to find the etiologies of morbidity and mortality of sepsis. One of them is the damage of endothelial glycocalyx layer, which can lead to an increase in plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) level and a decrease in platelets. This damage can be prevented by administering albumin; unfortunately, it is costly. Therefore, an alternative albumin is required. Channa striata extract albumin has been found to be relatively effective in increasing serum albumin levels. However, studies on its effectiveness are still limited. Hence, we analyzed this channa striata extract albumin in stabilizing PAI-1 and platelet levels of septic patients. AIM: This study analyzed channa striata extract albumin in stabilizing PAI-1 and platelet levels of septic patients. METHODS: We conducted a randomized control experimental study in patients with sepsis hospitalized at Dr Moewardi Hospital, Surakarta, Indonesia. The samples were taken by consecutive sampling technique. These patients were allocated into two groups, the albumin extract of channa striata, and human albumin 20% (the control) groups. We examined the PAI-1 and platelet levels on the 1st and 3rd days. We used Mann–Whitney test for statistical analysis with p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: There were 21 subjects in each group of channa striata (study) and human albumin (control). The increase of PAI-1 level in the study group (0.36 ng/ml) was lower than that of in control group (0.72 ng/ml). More subjects in study group experienced decreased PAI-1 level (n = 5) than those in control group (n = 3), the decrease more profound in control group (p = 0.004) than study group (p = 0.054). The decrease of platelet level was also greater in study group (22 × 103/mcl) than that of in control group (1 × 103.md) despite insignificant difference (p = 0.364 and p = 0.468). CONCLUSION: The administration of channa striata extract effective in stabilizing PAI-1 level in sepsis patient and also had potential benefit as human albumin in stabilizing platelet levels of septic patients.

In the present study, an attempt was made to investigate the in vitro antioxidant, anticancer, and antibacterial activities of Delonix regia, then in vivo evaluate its safety as a natural colorant and sweetener in beverages compared to synthetic colorant and sweetener in rats, then serve the beverages for sensory evaluation. Delonix regia flowers had high protein, polysaccharide, Ca, Na, Mg, K, and Fe contents. The Delonix regia pigment extract (DRPE) polysaccharides were separated and purified by gel permeation chromatography on Sephacryl S-200, characterized by rich polysaccharides (13.6 g/L). The HPLC sugar profile detected the monosaccharides in the extracted polysaccharides, composed of mannose, galactose, glucose, arabinose, and gluconic acid, and the structure of saccharides was confirmed by FTIR, which showed three active groups: carbonyl, hydrocarbon, and hydroxyl. On the other hand, the red pigment constituents of DRPE were detected by HPLC; the main compounds were delphinidin and cyanidin at 15 µg/mL. The DRPE contained a considerable amount (26.33 mg/g) of anthocyanins, phenolic compounds (64.7 mg/g), and flavonoids (10.30 mg/g), thus influencing the antioxidant activity of the DRPE, which scavenged 92% of DPPH free radicals. Additionally, it inhibited the population of pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocyogenes, Salmonella typhimurum, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in the range of 30–90 μg/mL, in addition to inhibiting 85% of pancreatic cancer cell lines. On the in vivo level, the rats that were delivered a diet containing DRPE showed regular liver markers (AST, ALP, and ALT); kidney markers (urea and creatinine); high TP, TA, and GSH; and low MDA, while rats treated with synthetic dye and aspartame showed higher liver and kidney markers; lowered TP, TA, and GSH; and high MDA. After proving the safety of DRPE, it can be safely added to strawberry beverages. Significant sensorial traits, enhanced red color, and taste characterize the strawberry beverages supplemented with DRPE. The lightness and redness of strawberries were enhanced, and the color change ΔE values in DRPE-supplemented beverages ranged from 1.1 to 1.35 compared to 1.69 in controls, indicating the preservative role of DRPE on color. So, including DRPE in food formulation as a natural colorant and sweetener is recommended for preserving health and the environment.

Bioconversion of the Brown Tunisian Seaweed Halopteris scoparia: Application to Energy

The brown Tunisian seaweed Halopteris scoparia was used as a feedstock for producing renewable bioethanol, biogas, and biodiesel to demonstrate the proof of concept for the North African energy sector. A quantitative and qualitative quantification of H. scoparia composition using different colorimetric methods was completed to highlight its bioconversion potential. These substrate inputs were subjected to anaerobic fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae to produce bioethanol. The materials were also used to generate bio-hydrogen and volatile fatty acids during dark fermentation by a bacterial consortium and using the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. The lipids were extracted and trans-esterified to Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAMEs), and their profiles were then analyzed with gas chromatography (GC). A significant ratio of the bioethanol, e.g., 0.35 g ethanol/g DW substrate, was produced without pretreatment, consistent with the theoretical Gay-Lussac yield. The production of the biohydrogen and lipids were up to 1.3 mL H2/g DW substrate and 0.04 g/g DW substrate, respectively, from the raw biomass. These results were higher than those reported for other well-studied seaweeds such as L. japonica. Overall, this work contributes to the current investigations in Tunisia for producing alternative energies from algae and finding new solutions to the current energy situation and environmental challenges in Maghreb.
