RESUMO:Neste trabalho realizou-se um estudo farmacobotânico comparativo entre as folhas de Turnera chamaedrifolia Cambess. e Turnera subulata Sm. (Turneraceae), espécies cujas folhas são usadas na medicina popular. As identifi cações botânicas e as morfodiagnoses macroscópicas foram realizadas após estudos morfológicos. Para as morfodiagnoses microscópicas realizaramse secções paradérmicas e transversais de folhas (lâmina e pecíolo), que foram posteriormente clarifi cadas em hipoclorito (1%) e coradas com safranina hidroalcoólica e safrablue. As duas espécies compartilham o mesmo tipo de estômato, paracítico, entretanto, T. chamaedrifolia possui folhas com a epiderme hipoestomática, com células de paredes ondeadas; o mesofi lo dorsiventral; e a vascularização do pecíolo com três feixes nas porções distal e mediana, e apenas um feixe na proximal. Em T. subulata a epiderme é anfi-hipoestomática, com paredes sinuosas; mesofi lo isobilateral; e a vascularização do pecíolo possui um feixe na porção distal e três feixes nas porções mediana e proximal. A morfologia das estruturas vegetativas e reprodutivas associada à anatomia foliar são caracteres distintivos para estas espécies.Unitermos: Turnera chamaedrifolia, Turnera subulata, Turneraceae, farmacobotânica, plantas medicinais.ABSTRACT: "Comparative and pharmacobotanical study of the leaves of Turnera chamaedrifolia Cambess. and Turnera subulata Sm. (Turneraceae)". This work is a comparative pharmacobotanical study between the leaves of Turnera chamaedrifolia Cambess. and Turnera subulata Sm. (Turneraceae), which are used in folk medicine. The botanical identifi cations and macroscopical morphodiagnosis were done after morphological studies. The microscopical morphodiagnosis was carried out by paradermic and transversal cuts of the leaves (blade and petiole), clarifi ed and coloured with safranin and astrablue. The leaves of T. chamaedrifolia have hypostomatics epidermis, with wavy cells walls; the mesophyll is dorsiventral; and the vascular system of the peciole has three vascular bundles in the distal and medium portions, and only one, in the proximal portion. T. subulata has amphihypostomatic epidermis, with sinuous cells walls; the mesophyll is isobilateral; and the vascular system of the petiole has only one vascular bundle in the distal portion and three in the medium and proximal portions. The vegetative and reproductive morphologies associated to the leaf anatomy constitute a set of distinctive characters for these species.

RESUMO: "Flavanonas isoladas das partes aéreas de Cordia globosa (Jacq.) Kunth (Boraginaceae)". A análise fitoquímica das partes aéreas de Cordia globosa, coletadas no município de Picuí, PB, Brasil, resultou no isolamento e identificação estrutural da 7,4'-dimetilnarigenina (0,025 g) e eriodictiol (0,015 g). Estas duas flavanonas são as primeiras agliconas, desta classe, isoladas no gênero Cordia.Unitermos: Cordia globosa, Boraginaceae, flavanonas, 7,4'-dimetilnarigenina, eriodictiol. ABSTRACT:The phytochemical analysis of aerial parts of Cordia globosa, collected in the Municipality of Picuí, State of Paraíba, Brazil, resulted in the isolation and structural identification of narigenin-4',7-dimethyl ether (0.025 g) and eriodictyol (0.015 g). These compounds are the first flavanones aglycones isolated from the genus Cordia.

S u m m a r yThe control of trypanosomosis in animals and humans based on chemotherapy is limited and not ideal, since the agents used are associated with severe side effects, and emergence of relapse and drug resistant parasites. The need for the development of new, cheap and safe compounds stimulated this study. Three concentrations (211, 21.1 and 2.11 mg per ml) of chloroform stem bark extract of Annona muricata were screened for trypanocidal activity against Trypanosoma brucei brucei in vitro . Also, two doses (200 mg per kg and 100 mg per kg) of the extract were evaluated for trypanocidal activity in rats infected with the parasite. Haematological parameters were determined on day 1 post infection and on days 1, 6 and 30-post extract treatment. The extracts inhibited parasite motility and totally eliminated the organisms at the concentrations used in vitro . The extract also showed promising in vivo trypanocidal activity. The observed in vitro and in vivo trypanocidal activities may be due to the presence of bioactive compounds present in the extracts as seen in this study. The extract also improved the observed decreases in haematological parameters of the treated rats, which may be due to their ability to decrease parasite load. The observed oral LD 50 of 1,725.05 mg per kg of the chloroform A . muricata extract using up and down method is an indication of very low toxicity, implying that the extract could be administered with some degree of safety.

Abstract: A systematic pharmacological examination has been made of 55 Jamaican plants, most of which have a local reputation as medicinals. A number of interesting, but no outstanding, activities were observed. The results are tabulated.
