Drug–drug interactions (DDIs) pose a major problem to patient safety. eHealth solutions have the potential to address this problem and generally improve medication management by providing digital services for health care professionals and patients. Clinical decision support systems (CDSS) to alert physicians or pharmacists about DDIs are common, and there is an extensive body of research about CDSS for professionals. Information about DDIs is commonly requested by patients, but little is known about providing similar support to patients. The aim of this scoping review was to explore and describe current knowledge about providing digital DDI services for patients. Using a broad search strategy and an established framework for scoping reviews, 19 papers were included. The results show that although some patients want to check for DDIs themselves, there are differences between patients, in terms of demands and ability. There are numerous DDI services available, but the existence of large variations regarding service quality implies potential safety issues. The review includes suggestions about design features but also indicates a substantial knowledge gap highlighting the need for further research about how to best design and provide digital DDI to patients without risking patient safety or having other unintended consequences.

Background: Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) require specialized therapeutic interventions. The decreased renal function that modulates the physiology and presence of comorbidities is often associated with variations in the pharmacological response, thus increasing the risk of adverse drug events or reactions (ADE/ADRs) from co-administered drugs. Methods: A cross-sectional study to record comorbidities, drug–drug interactions (DDIs), ADE/ADRs in patients with chronic kidney disease of stage five in Greece. The study enrolled 60 patients of mean age 64.8 ± 12.9 years, undergoing hemodialysis three times a week. Demographic and social factors, comorbidities, laboratory test data, medication regimens, DDIs and the reporting of ADE/ADRs were analyzed. Results: Cardiovascular diseases and diabetes were the main comorbidities. In total, 50 different DDIs of various clinical significance were identified. CNS, GI-track, and musculoskeletal-system-related ADE/ADRs were most often reported by patients. ADE/ADRs as clinical outcome from DDIs were associated in 64% of the total identified DDIs. There was a positive trend between number of medications, ADE/ADRs report and DDIs. Conclusions: The impact of ADE/ADRs in ESRD patients should be always considered. Guidelines as well as continuous training in the context of evidence-based clinical practice by healthcare personnel on therapy administration and prevention of adverse events are important.

Customer satisfaction is an essential aspect of quality of service. In healthcare, customer satisfaction, also known as patient satisfaction is an indicator for measuring the quality of service and how happy the patient is with the professional services received in the industry. This parameter is essential for all healthcare organizations, as it is used for improving service delivery and strategic goals. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the patients’ level of satisfaction regarding professional pharmaceutical services provided by certified pharmacists of 14 private pharmacies in the Kasihan Subdistrict, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The nonexperimental descriptive design with a cross-sectional method was employed in this study. It involved 308 participants and was conducted from November 2018 to May 2019. The patients’ level of satisfaction was measured using the Service Quality (SERVQUAL) approach involving five dimensions, namely; reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and tangibles. The results showed that the patients’ level of satisfaction on the average was satisfactory, at 80.2%. Besides, satisfaction based on reliability was 82.5%, responsiveness was 85.5%, assurance was 85.8%, empathy was 76.3%, while the dimension of tangibles was 70.9%. In conclusion, patients were satisfied on an average, regarding the professional services provided by the staff of certified pharmacies in the region.
