Phase fraction measurement of oil–gas–water three-phase flow with stratified gas by ultrasound technique

Abstract: Phase fraction is one of important indexes to characterize multiphase flow. In order to measure each phase fraction of oil-gas-water three-phase flow, liquid level height is detected by Time of Flight – TOF of reflected ultrasound at gas-liquid interface, while oil phase fraction in reflection path is calculated according to the ultrasound attenuation. By studying interactions between multiphase flow and the ultrasound propagation in certain flow patterns, a prediction model for phase fraction measurement of t… Show more

“…In recent years, numerous scholars have conducted both theoretical and experimental research on multiphase flow, utilizing various measurement techniques, including electrical methods [13,14], ultrasonic methods [15][16][17], optical methods [18], and ray methods [19][20][21]. Table 1 presents the performance of different measurement techniques when measuring liquid film thickness in multiphase flow.…”

“…The level-sensing mechanism can be classified into two types: continuous level measurement using time-of-flight measurements [23] and point level detection based on a physical property change of the piezo sensor [7,23]. In time-offlight measurements, piezoelectric actuators generate ultrasonic waves to the surface of the liquid, and piezo sensors detect the reflected waves [24,25]. The time between the generation and detection of the wave can be easily converted to the distance by considering the speed of the waves in a matter.…”
