Phase-Only Control of Peak Sidelobe Level and Pattern Nulls Using Iterative Phase Perturbations

Abstract: Minimization of the maximum sidelobe level for a given array geometry, amplitude distribution, and nulling sectors by phase-only adjustment of the element coefficients is studied. Nonlinear optimization problem for phase distribution is solved using a novel iterative convex optimization algorithm, which includes mutual coupling effects and exploits small phase perturbations at each step. Superiority of the algorithm in terms of the peak sidelobe level and nulling depth achieved over several optimization method… Show more

“…A variety of algorithms have been examined to achieve radiation pattern nulls by altering the amplitudes of excitation coefficients only (Ibrahim, 1991; Liao & Chu, 1997; Vu, 1984), phases only (Aslan et al., 2019; Haupt, 1997), inter‐element spacing (Hejres, 2004; Ismail & Dawoud, 1991), or any combination of these methods (Chatterjee et al., 2017; Khosravi et al., 2016; Mohammed, 2018; Vu, 1992). Ibrahim (1991) developed a null steering technique using real weight control, suitable for small‐sized arrays as the number of variable attenuators required is huge.…”

“…Benjamin Fuchs [2] using the semi positive definite relaxation technique, converted the non-convex problem into a convex optimization solution, which was successfully applied to phase-only weighted beam control. In [3], phase-only weighted of low side lobe and pattern nulls were realized by using iterative phase perturbation technique. However, these methods are mainly applied to low side lobe and beam nulls, and the main lobe broadening ability is weak.…”

“…However, this topology supports only a limited number of different radial coordinates, which restricts its applicability for density tapering [25]. (iii) Amplitude and/or phase tapered arrays can achieve sufficient SLL suppression, but this comes at the expense of a significantly reduced array efficiency [26]. Moreover, since all the elements are active while generating both the narrow and wide beams, the heat generation in such arrays are much higher as compared to the thinned arrays.…”
