Phenolic Compounds Isolated from Caesalpinia coriaria Induce S and G2/M Phase Cell Cycle Arrest Differentially and Trigger Cell Death by Interfering with Microtubule Dynamics in Cancer Cell Lines

Abstract: Caesalpinia coriaria (C. coriaria), also named cascalote, has been known traditionally in México for having cicatrizing and inflammatory properties. Phytochemical reports on Caesalpinia species have identified a high content of phenolic compounds and shown antineoplastic effects against cancer cells. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify the active compounds of a water:acetone:ethanol (WAE) extract of C. coriaria pods and characterize their cytotoxic effect and cell death induction in different can… Show more

“…In addition, pyrogallol inhibits human lung adenocarcinoma Calu-6 cell via caspase-dependent apoptosis and cell cycle arrest [49,50]. Moreover, ethyl gallate, which is a phenolic compound, has been reported to exhibit anticancer activity against many cell lines such as human prostate cancer PC3, cervical cancer HeLa and CaSki, human hepatocellular carcinoma Hep3B and HepG2 cells [51]. In previous studies ethyl gallate induces HL-60 apoptosis via the mitochondria-mediated pathway.…”

“…Other study showed G2/M phase cell arrest with sulforaphane compound found in R. sativus methanolic extract (Pledgie-Tracy et al, 2007). The treated HepG2 cells with 1/10 of IC50 of A. santolina induce sub G0 phase apoptosis (Sánchez-Carranza et al, 2017).…”
