Extracts obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SCE) and pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) from the Ajuga iva aerial parts growth in three different geographical sites of Alegria were analysed. Tocopherols in SCE Extracts were quantified by HPLC, α-tocopherol dominated the profile in both A. iva of Bejaia (BEJ) and Bordj Bou Arreridj (BBA), while β-tocopherol was the lowest. PLE method produced higher extraction yields than SCE method, which ranged from 0.31 to 24.95% (w/w), the water gave the best yields extraction. Total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 15.60 to 63.45mg GAE/g DWE; also the water gave higher total yield of phenolics, and the best TPC from DWP. The antioxidant activity was assessed by different assays, water and SCE extracts showed a slightly higher antioxidative effect than that obtained by Ethanol and Acetone. A slight opposite trend was obtained with the FRAP antioxidant activity; Acetone was the best extract after SCE extracts. Small differences in antioxidant activity values were found between the different sites of A. iva: BEJ, BBA, and ELO.

Different conventional (maceration and heat-assisted extraction) and new alternative techniques (ultrasound-assisted and microwave-assisted extractions) have been developed for the extraction of polyphenols compounds from different plant sources. Novel procedures have established with the aim to reduce the extraction time and solvent consumption, as well as to increase polyphenols yield and to improve extract quality. A critical review was conducted to introduce and compare traditional and modern procedures applied for extraction of bioactive polyphenols compounds. This review focuses on the different techniques of polyphenols extraction, discussing their operating conditions, mechanism, choice of particle size and solvent, solid/solvent ratio, extraction time, advantages/disadvantages and effectiveness. Finally, potential application of these extraction procedures in polyphenols isolation is reviewed.

This investigation demonstrates that programmed cell death (PCD) in a cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa, resulting from allelopathic stress induced by a submerged macrophyte, Myriophyllum spicatum, in a coculture system. The hallmarks of PCD, caspase-3-like protease activity, DNA fragmentation, and destruction of cell ultrastructure, as well as intracellular PCD signaling radicals, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and nitric oxide (NO), were measured in M. aeruginosa cells co-cultured with M. spicatum for 7 days. The results showed a dose-response relationship between M. spicatum biomass and M. aeruginosa mortality. A caspase-3-like protease was activated and elevated from day 3. Thylakoid disintegration, cytoplasmic vacuolation, and fuzzy nuclear zone were observed by transmission electron microscopy, and distinct DNA fragmentation was detected in M. aeruginosa cells at a M. spicatum biomass of 6.0 g fresh weight (FW) L −1 during the 7 days. Allelochemicals of total phenolic compounds (TPCs) were determined in co-culture water, and the concentration increased with increasing of M. spicatum biomass and co-culture time. Compared with the level of ROS production in the control group, a significant overproduction of ROS was detected in M. aeruginosa cells in the treatment group, and this was positively correlated with TPC concentration. Furthermore, the level of intracellular NO increased with the percent mortality of M. aeruginosa. The results indicated that a PCD pathway was induced in the cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa when co-cultured with the submerged macrophyte M. spicatum.
