“…There are five bottlenecks with the reproductive development of cassava that challenge breeding. These are: (1) in some genotypes with traits of interest, flowering is late or in some cases there is no flowering at all; (2) premature abortion of inflorescences and flowers before anthesis; (3) disproportionately large number of male flowers and in some cases no female flowers; (4) non-synchronous development of flowers among genotypes; and (5) low probability of fruit development even when flowering and pollination are successful (Ceballos et al, 2004(Ceballos et al, , 2016Halsey et al, 2008;Adeyemo et al, 2017;Hyde et al, 2020;Souza et al, 2020).…”

“…Koefender et al [24] observed flowering and the presence of fruits in all the plants they evaluated. Flowering is influenced by genetic and environmental factors and varies greatly in germplasm collections [51,56]. In this study flowering was assessed, as a qualitative descriptor (presence-absence); however, more in-depth flowering studies must be conducted in the Ecuadorian collection to be used in formal breeding; although the most common form of propagation and/or multiplication is vegetative reproduction by cuttings.…”

“…These studies likely underestimate the impact of inbreeding depression, as only measured plants that successfully grew from self-fertilized seed can be measured, missing impacts on seed germination and sexual reproduction traits. Further evidence for poor sexual reproductive ability in cassava comes from high variability in flowering time, low numbers of female flowers, high rates of flower abortion, and low seed set (Ceballos et al, 2004; Silva Souza et al, 2020; Oluwasanya et al, 2021). These limitations in seed production and viability limits breeders’ abilities to make the successful crosses inherently necessary for developing new varieties and making genetic gains.…”
