Phenology, Growth and Pod Yield of French Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) as Influenced by Temperature Variations Under Different Sowing Dates

Abstract: The experiment was conducted at the research field of the Agronomy Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Bangladesh during rabi season of 2017-2018 to evaluate the flowering behavior and pod yield of French bean. Three varieties namely BARI Jharsheem-1, BARI Jharsheem-2 and BARI Jharsheem-3 were sown on 30 November, 15 December and 30 December, respectively for getting temperature variation. Sowing dates based on temperature variation, significantly affect the flowering behaviour and pod… Show more

“…It was observed that in both varieties the flowering dynamics follow the same linear pattern, increasing the number of floral nodes with an increase in the GDD. This linear relation between the number of open flowers and the GDD was also observed in field conditions in bean cultivation (Jenni et al, 2000;Kakon et al, 2019). The flowering dynamics varied between different environmental conditions (Table 2).…”

“…The differences in Number of pods/ plant among varieties might be seen because of the difference in their genetic make-up [3]. Sowing dates based on temperature variation significantly affects the flowering behavior and pod yield of bean varieties [6].…”

“…Green pods are rich in vitamins, protein and minerals. Moreover, a huge amount of French bean is consumed as soup [6]. The average national productivity of French bean is very small due to the inaccessibility of high yielding improved varieties and package of cultivation practices.…”

“…We allowed the base temperature to vary between 5°C and 8°C, choosing the upper limit based upon Kakon et al. (2018). Because our sample of genotypes is phonologically diverse, we allowed thermal time requirements to vary from between 28°C and 38°C.…”

“…We used joint numerical optimisation (scipy.optimize.minimize) to select genotype-specific base temperatures and thermal time requirements. We allowed the base temperature to vary between 5 C and 8 C, choosing the upper limit based upon Kakon et al (2018).…”
