Phenotypic Analysis of Urothelial Exfoliated Cells in Bladder Cancer via Microfluidic Immunoassays: Sialyl-Tn as a Novel Biomarker in Liquid Biopsies

Abstract: Bladder cancer is the most common malignancy of the urinary tract, having one of the highest recurrence rates and progression from non-muscle to muscle invasive bladder cancer that commonly leads to metastasis. Cystoscopy and urine cytology are the standard procedures for its detection but have limited clinical sensitivity and specificity. Herein, a microfluidic device, the UriChip, was developed for the enrichment of urothelial exfoliated cells from fresh and frozen urine, based on deformability and size, and… Show more

“…Indeed, Carvalho et al. (2020) ( 74 ) recently reported an association between STn expression and advanced bladder cancer stage and grade. However, the correlation between the STn antigen and prognosis seems to be rather ambiguous and cancer type-specific ( 64 ).…”

“…The device provided the first glycomic profile of colorectal CTCs. Following a similar concept, a "UriChip" was later developed to enrich and profile exfoliated tumor cells of bladder cancer patients (Carvalho et al, 2020). On-chip immunocapture of circulating bladder cancer cells was performed using antibodies specific to aberrantly glycosylated integrin (Wang Glycoprofiling of gastric disease states using a lectin-functionalized microfluidic.…”
