“…We took into account (i) the adaptive potential of the variants with respect to nutrients [24] and (ii) the enhanced dissociative activity of germinating dormant forms (DFs), compared to the vegetative bacterial cells [17,25,26]. Therefore, we investigated the MALDI pro files of the variants that developed on various media after plating of the cells from either growing cultures or DF suspensions.…”

“…It was established earlier that the variant forming activ ity and the composition of the intrapopulation spec trum vary depending on the properties of DF formed under various conditions and not only on the medium composition used for DF inoculation [19,21,25,27,28]. Therefore, in order to analyze the MALDI spectra of the variants, they were obtained by plating bacterial DF formed under various conditions on a number of media with different composition.…”

“…Since phase variation is associated with reversible genomic alterations [ 6 ], the appropriate approach was to compare these morphotypic variants with the original strain using a sensitive method to identify intraspecies strains such as BOX, ERIC, REP, and RAPD PCR [ 32 ]. In the study conducted by Pogorelova et al [ 51 ], BOX and ERIC-PCR fingerprinting were used to observe genomic alterations in Azospirillum brasilense (strains Sp7 and SP245), where ERIC-PCR showed identical profiles of the phase variants. In our case, the BOX and ERIC PCR profiles of both morphotypes were identical to the original strain ( Figure 3 ).…”
