Phenylpropanoid Sucrose Esters: Plant-Derived Natural Products as Potential Leads for New Therapeutics

Abstract: Natural products are regarded as vital key source of lead compounds for drug discovery due to their structural diversity and broad array of biological activities. Phenylpropanoid sucrose esters are naturally occurring compounds isolated from various plants and are structurally characterized by a sucrose core connected to one or more Ph-CH=CH-CO- moieties through an ester linkage. These compounds were extensively used in folk medicine and are found to possess many biological activities such as antitumor, antiba… Show more

“…Among these compounds, regaloside A was reported to have free radical scavenging activities (Panda et al, 2011), but no biological studies were performed for other compounds. Since 4-acetyl regaloside D was shown to have cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) and COX-2 inhibitory activities (Francis et al, 2004) and COX-2 was regarded as one of the major mediators in inflammatory response, further biochemical studies toward fishing out an active principles of LL extract including whether regaloside D attenuates CSinduced inflammation in animal models need to be performed.…”

“…This phenylpropanoid glycoside has numerous therapeutic effects; its antioxidant [31,36,37], kinase C inhibitor [38], immunomodulatory [39,40], hepatoprotective [41], anti-inflammatory [42][43][44], analgesic [45], and anti-asthmatic [46] actions have already been validated. Verbascoside has also been indicated to treat patients with the Parkinson disease, an oxidative stress-induced neurodegenerative condition [47].…”

“…Phenylpropanoids are present in fruits, vegetables, medicinal herbs (seeds, root, and leaves), and nuts [16,17]. Phenylpropanoids possess anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-allergenic, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties, which are beneficial to human health [18][19][20]. Phenylpropanoid is also reported to inhibit carcinogenesis and reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease [21,22].…”
